You know, one can move their eyes. Anyways, the rest would be wasted space, no matter what aspect ratio your device had.
"And phones with a 2:1 screen aren't easier to use one-handed than 16:9 alternatives. How hard the device is to use one-handed comes down to the size of the phone, not the aspect ratio. Not to mention that a 5" 16:9 display gives you more screen area than a 5" 2:1 display. You're literally being tricked by marketing here."
Yes. I know that 5 inch 16:9 is bigger than 5 inch 18:9, that's why S8 was 5.8" instead of 5.1". And usability also depends on aspect ratio, not just the size. Try to imagine a 500:1 screen, that wouldn't be usable, whether it was small or big. Even 1:1 with big enough screen wouldn't be as easily usable as 18:9.
"The 4:3 and 3:2 aspect ratios for productivity and surfing tablets has nothing to do with how many hands you use for it. It has everything to do with how we process visual information. Our visual field is a circle. A 1:1 tablet would be optimal for surfing the web, but would make watching videos and similar far worse, so a compromise is reached at the 4:3 and 3:2 ratios."
Why wouldn't 1:1 videos be a thing then? Wouldn't we benefit from having aspect ratio that would match our visual field? For me phone with longer screen is much better, even while surfing. It all comes to personal preferences.
"You say there isn't a single "well-known or widely used" smartphone with a 3:2 aspect ratio. What do you call the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S?"
I meant phones released in 2017/18. So let's call them things of the past. There's a good reason why Apple started to mane 16:9 devices and now manufactures ones with even taller screens, they are much more convenient (to a certain point).

Somehow the phone selling in the west are a bit higher, the Nokia 6 is 229(230)in the US ( not include tax yet). But the phone selling in the Chinese online retailer website are cheaper ( you pay the shipping, of course).
The Nokia 7 is currently selling for ¥1999, that's around 310 to 330 USD.

Except you do. 2:1 lets you see more of the web page while being easier to use with one hand vs 16:9.
"Did you never wonder why tablets with a focus on productivity and browsing tend to have far more square aspect ratios of 4:3 (iPad) or 3:2 (Surface, Pixelbook) instead of the wider 16:9?"
That's because they're designed to be used with both hands. With phones it's a different story. Do you ever wonder why there isn't a single* (touchscreen only) smartphone with 4:3, 3:2 or 1:1 aspect ratio?
There are also other benefits of 18:9 aspect ratio, for example LG's camera app has some neat tricks.
*Or at least well-known or widely used one.

Nokia's devices still looked and functioned like dumbphones. They hadn't caught up in terms of design and usability until 2010 with their Nokia N8 and Symbian^3, at which point it was too late.

The Nokia Devices division went un... moreNokia made their first smartphone way before apple did. There was nothing wrong with Symbian except that it took Nokia time to make Symbian touch friendly. Even today I have an 808 and the only problem it has is app support.
Marketing is the way to go. Steve jobs had a reality distortion field which made people believe that he invented the smartphone or an app store or front camera video calling. Fact is, Nokia had all of that before the iphone was even launched.
All that tech and innovation for nothing without proper execution, and without giving people what they wanted at that time: a touch friendly UI. Most people moved to iPhone not because it was better, but because it was easy to use.
