Sunday Debate: Custom ROM vs. Stock Android

I prefer stock Android not because a customized Android (like TouchWiz) isn't what I want (it IS!) but because it invariably turns out my idea of "customization" steeply differs from any existing mainstream one, so I just have to add every still missing feature (OF WHICH ARE LEGION!) myself by finding a suitable app to do it for me. As for Android "being ready", we can have that discussion again when stock Android has system-level arbitrary-server-synced memos/notes - a feature even YE OLDE SYMBIAN S60 had via built-in SyncML!

Custom rom is nice if your device has reached it's end of the update cycle and you are preparing for another phone to buy or your phone that come with the firmware out of the box sucks really hard else avoid custom roms cos they almost always come with some bugs which can be annoying to no end. Flash custom roms on my Galaxy S2 back then and the bugs went unfixed for ages that i went back to TW (believe it or not) and was happier, though if there was a stock Android that works well for it, i'll flash that one.

I'm more in the middle of both. I want the clean appearance of Android. with the features of a costum rom. Since a clean rom of ANDROID is not answering my needs. I've gone for the costum rom option

Er... I install custom ROM to get stock Android, because while MIUI has a lot of features, I don't like its look. It's like an Android UI trying hard to be like iOS's UI, although it did it well. I just don't like it, I'd buy an iPhone if I wanted iOS (after saving my money of course). Besides, although Redmi 4X has a quite powerful specifications, somehow MIUI feels like it's dragging the system down. Also, some features that are default in stock Android are removed or need extra steps to do, like quick reply from notification. Installing RR really fixed things up and I love the customisations. Don't really think I'll return to MIUI anytime soon.

Happy with custom ROM is it's possible to choose to have stock Android. Which it never is. Happy with additional apps, provided I can at least disable those I don't want to run.
Otherwise - stock android.
How many people buy a phone because of the layer that sits over stock Android?

some people need to learn to read the article first then comment
what the article mention was stock OEM UI (samsung's, MIUI, etc) vs pure android (like android one or the one on Pixel's)
not pure android vs custom ROM (lineage, cyanogenmod, etc) which you need to flash on top of your stock UI
as long it has less bug + less bloatware + fast update anything is fine for me.
stock OEM UI has bloatware and depend on the UI, it's possible to uninstall it completely or at least disable it. like ZenUI at least can disable some of their bloatware apps unlike MIUI which is you can't even disable it

Using Stock Android gets a little boring as day today use requires many shortcut's and fast readability to what we want (No Default file explorer makes me go Crazy :( and i hate using file explorer's from the app store they are useless).
While Custom ROM gives a lot of features but take a toll on Performance of the phone, but taking into consideration today's 4&6 GB RAM they can handle anything thrown at them which makes Custom ROM Good for me.

AOSP to the heart! Naked OS, as Google intended. And, if I want more, I can customize it with different tools, like Xposed and Magisk modules, Substratum themes and so on... These guys (devs) are the second best thing that happened to Android, besides hardware improvement in its devices.

I choose OEM Costom's Android cause Stock Android looks like less features but sure has good optimization too.

Stock Android is the worst. It's nothing more than just a dumbed down, lite / demo version of Android which is lacking of essential features like file manager, FM Radio, option to change screen resolution, ...
Samsung and LG have the best Android, because they are the most feature packed. That's how a real smartphone is supposed to be.
The second vote option is manipulative, because the "neat" and "clean" words manipulate most people, that's why they vote on that.

YalokIy, 18 Feb 2018How can you call stock ROM custom ?
Custom ROM is the one ... moreNeither the Pixels nor the Android One phones, especially the HTC U11 Life or the Mi A1, run stock. Just because it looks like that it doesn't mean it is.
Pure AOSP lacks all kinds of features. It's more barebone than some of the light ROMs out there.

Just think once. R u really want neat and clean Android Rom? Because even google also give you those software which is not used by you even a single time.
Every time you get update and wasted you inbuilt memory you cant uninstall it.
So we need freedom of what we keep in out mobile and what not.

Most people commenting here are the sort that have the time and energy to tinker with their phones anyway - of course they believe that the preloaded non-stock OS or iOS is the work of the devil.

I think stock Android is good but I find it a little bit boring. I tried Nova launcher for a day, which is close to stock Android but it's not mine. I definitely prefer Samsung Experience.

Hey @Yordan, according to PhoneArena, LCD AOD isn't necessarily more energy intensive than OLED. Here's an interesting article about LG G5 vs Galaxy S7, in which they now the G5 uses 70mW of power compared to 75mW for the S7, despite the G5 having an LCD screen: https://www.phonearena.com/news/Galaxy-S7-vs-LG-G5-Always-On-Displays-energy-efficient-or-power-drainers_id81565

Can we have a vote with third option having stock android with mx player??
If it doesn't get 90 percent votes i would be surprised..
I have had my stock android xperience with nexus 7, moto g4 and moto g4 plus, few minutes on a nexus 4, and 5..
Poor scaling, terrible ui and whatnot..
Most people who are so into stock android would definitely have customised it into something else... Well i like how Samsung and sony customised its rom... There's no other music player that can autotag like sony can, and there's no ai that can lock your screen other than bixby..

Poll results say stock android, but sales results say otherwise.
My brother bought a Nokia 6 few months ago, but had to return it for a Samsung because the stock android doesn't support direct video calling.
In case you wonder why my brother needs direct video calling, he is deaf and mute. So to use sign language they need direct video calling. It is cheaper and easier than using an app like whatsapp.
