Custom ROMs are the only way to get rid of Google's and OEM's backdoors and spyware.

Stock Android is good but all the Nexus/pixel are buggy beyond imagination.
I remember the lollipop nightmare which made my phone almost unusable at times.
Yes lollipop is old news but the current pixel 2 bug reports everyday tell me that this hasn't stopped.I currently have a phone which launched with nougat and don't update, all I need is bug free factory software.

Though stock android is really good, its also really drab, plain and dull at the same time.

OEM customizations often have neat features that actually do end up saving time (hope there are some fans of "double tap to wake screen"). Also Ivan has already agreed that other OEMs like Samsung, LG, Huawei have often pioneered customizations which have been later incorporated into Stock Android.

Wouldnt that mean that these customizations are good, acceptable and necessary. And would stock android have incorporated them if these software customizations had not been spearheaded by the likes of Samsung/LG/Huawei etc ???

Would it not have killed innovation and kept stock android with drab looking incremental updates ???

Saying that OEMs software customizations have always been way ahead of the curve compared to stock android just about sums it up.

And who needs the latest version of Android? I updated to Oreo and am actually missing the Nougat version. So long as the security patches keep coming, Marshmallow/Nougat/Oreo/P dont make that much difference.

Having my MI A1 made me understand what Stock means, and what "experience" also means; its flawless! its awesome!

Custom Roms like samsung UX 8.x or One plus Oxygen OS offers great features. But OPPO's Colour OS or Vivo's funtouch OS are completely look like ios. So i don't like.
If you want smooth performance then go for pure android. Personally in my opinion stock android is better.

I like features of Custom ROMs but they lack optimization and poor software updates :(

Custom ROM. Vanilla phones are supposed to be clean, but yet they have less free space and benchmarks are identical, so is real-life performance. On the other hand you lose tons of options like double tap to wake and whatnot. And it's not like Nexus/Pixel phones or Mi A1 are bug-free. So there's no point in having non-customized version.

I prefer custom roms, they usually have all that I need

stock Android is overrated in all aspects.

I'm using A1 as the stock Android 8.0 and I still missing some TW features from S8.

                        not on hardware, but features.

                        1. Screenshot in TW is advance.
                        2. direct media volume with volume button.
                        3. minor like clipboard (you can add with app later)

but give it times, stock Android will has features like TW.

should have titled custom stock rom or custom oem rom vs stock android....custom rom menas lineage os, resurrection remix, nitrogen os, aex etc.

The article should change its title, custom ROMs often refer to CyanogenMod/Lineage ROM, ParanoidAndroid ROMs or Resurrection ROMs.

Remember, the result can not be used to represent what people actually want, bcz most of people dont vote, only those who have sparetime did, (mostly kids). They are love gaming so lighter is better.

It gives advantage for stock android.

Custom Rom always show the innovative ideas to Google how its OS, UI and UX should be done better. You cannot deny that because of all OEMs want to do features of their phone better than others, they keep breaking the limitation of Adroid again and again which Google finally recognize and accept as basic features later. Of course I like fast OS update too. Like someone said, I wish all OEMs put their customized launcher, apps and features in Play Store and let the Phone come with Stock android. Whoever like their apps will download and use. But I also know that the ROM is not only about software. It is also about hardware integration which OEMs will integrate different HW components for their product to be unique and innovate. So for now android will be like this. I hope Google and OEMs can really modularize their custom components and basic android OS separately. phewwww....

I have been always been a great fan stock / vanilla Android. I never felt the need to additional features. No need of extra features,if one knows how to use stock features smartly.

I feel stock ROM helps only when OEM stops updating the phones. Sometimes a capable hardware is crippled due to lack of updates. In fact I will be happy to see if custom ROM with Windows OS are available to be loaded on Android phones.

Well, my 2 years old V20 still stuck with Nougat until today has shown me that staying with stock is the way to go. It's not a must to have the latest Android, but it is always better to keep OS up-to-date, at least with the security patches.
