Gartner: Smartphone sales declined for first time ever in Q4 2017

23 February 2018
Huawei and Xiaomi are the only Top 5 companies that sold more phones compared to last year.

1000$ for phone is crazy. Not buying a phone over 200$-300$. But thanks to contracts for other countries, they dont even bother about the prices anymore, its 20$/mo vs 10$/mo for them.

I think it's because smart phones are getting better every year, I'm still rocking the Google pixel and I have no regrets not upgrading to the pixel 2 because my phone works the same way it did the first day I got it and it's even better with the 8.1 update. But I know I will be upgrading to the next pixel this year end because I know it will have a better camera and better battery life😊

Their prices are cheaper because they're willing to make less profit on every phone sold to sell more phones thereby making the money back when they sell more phones overall as shown by the Gartner results.

This kind of news should actually be no surprise anymore. What with the steadily increasing prices of smartphones, people would surely want to keep their phones for longer.

Who in their right mind would want to waste money buying a brand new expensive phone that isnt any more much different than last year’s model? Certainly not someone like me. I’d stick to what I have now and wait a few years for real innovation to happen!

However if LG Samsung or Sony implemented that then it would be awesome and their asking prices would be justified but knowing reality, the price would need to be enough to stretch their pockets even more.

Flagship phones bill of materials usually is around $200-300.
That's why I don't buy phones for more than $350.
I don't give a crap about R&D, marketing, shipping etc because this is where all consumer money goes.

Instead of focusing on adding features & hardware they do the opposite...

Why has the IR blaster dissappeared? I don't need a TV remote at all, I want my phone to do it all. (it's a portable all-in-one computer after all)

Why has the 3.5mm jack disappeared? I'm not about that dongle life, hassle with it yourselves.

Why has the microsd slot disappeared? Keep your hackable & privacy-free clouds to yourselves! I got all my data locally stored available on-the-go as I please.

Why are more and more devices coming out with no improvements or barely noticeable ones? - in order to leech the sheep - plain and simple.

All in all, company money is just very unwisely spent (a lot of it goes to feed the bank accounts/pockets/duffle bags of the posh lifestyles) therefore I will restrict that by will wisely spending mine. :-)

"Due to the massive success of the Galaxy S8 duo and the disappointment with the pricing and launch strategy of the iPhone X, Samsung was back in the lead both in volume and market share ahead of Apple for Q4."

According to other statistics like IDC Samsung sold less units than Apple in Q4. Also look at the profit Samsung mobile division made in Q4 this year, its less than last year even though they had the Note 7 issue then, so the math tells us that the S/Note 8 series could not have done that good in Q4.

I hope Sony and HTC look at the Samsung devices and wise up. Samsung success must in some way be attributable to the fact that they tick more boxes than most. Wireless charging, decent screen, decent cameras front and back, choice of form factor. The gimmick 4k screens, squeeze sides, uber shiny backs, count for nothing if you slowly strip out bits and features. Samsung also has the huge advantage of offering its two widely appealing flagships early in the year, and at the same time. LG and HTC should consider that, as it reduces Buyers remotes. If they offered a V40 in two sizes, at the same time, as opposed to a bigger/better one 4 months later, then buyers would know that they were making a secure choice. The screen and front camera let LG down last year. And the screen and lack of wireless charging and 3.5 jack hampered HTC. Launching multiple variants of the same device is not great, particularly if the difference is RAM, size.

I guess people are now turning towards utility part of handset rather than just an Adrenalin rush., Over the period people (At least me :)) ) have realized that all the value of your money spent on a phone does not even last for six months!! as the same brand will launch something better than that of what you have bought or some other brand would do it and all the charm and hype you (and your circle) had about your phone goes away, people have or should realize that all phones have same functionality of making us talk/message and post scrap on social media, shoot decent photos (By the way what you do of so many pictures except for uploading on Social media ?) no point in spending ultra/high end phones which costs even more than combined cost of LED TV+Fully Automatic Washing machine+Good two door Refrigerator+An Oven or Vacuum Cleaner !! at least this is fact in India, you can buy all these things at the price of an iPhone X or S8/+, or upcoming S9!!
