Bussiness, 26 Feb 2018Until their camera sensor bussiness drops below certain lev... moreThat's what I suspected as well, the bad image processing software.
However, it makes more sense to create a base of loyal customers for your consumer products (phones in this case). Because, at the end of the day, if another company starts producing marginally better camera sensors than you, all the companys will switch suppliers - they have no loyalty, no feelings. Consumers, do. The so-called fanboys are understandable somewhat - when a company has released four major flagship products in a row and they were all really good, they will buy the fifth no matter how good it is (Apple?). And you can get by one or two years with sub-par products, because your customer base will still buy your products due to nostalgia (Nokia?), brand trust, etc.
I've also thought that there are some hidden reasons for Sony's non interest with their mobile phone cameras...
..but it wouldn't surprise me to just be poor management and ingnorance towards user feedback.

Sony ISO numbers are kind of fake, I have experience with canon and Sony point to shoot cameras, Sony numbers were pointless.

I'd say this sensor is headed for standardized automotive self driving applications, such as Waymo, or maybe even proprietary ones used by Google and Apple.
The noise in these sensors at such high ISO will be horrendous. And because of the base ISO tuning for high gain, the image quality will be sub-par at low ISO as well. It's like a sensor in Sony A7s, where the sensor was absolutely awesome at high ISOs, due to base ISO being set to 3200, but at low ISOs, the A7r outperformed it by a fairly wide margin.
The difference here being that those cameras have huge sensors, and the gain tuning vs sensor size wasn't as extreme as it will be in this tiny thing.

When 920 fps came most of tbe people here were saying thats a gimmick but now your favorite brand were trying to copy it.and how about 4k hdr recording (again its world first in the smartphone industry) which is currently available right now r u still unconvinced?

Useless for smartphone cameras. If you bump up the ISO Levels over 200, you can start to see noise on smartphone cameras. With such high ISO, the noise levels will be really, really high unless paired with a variable aperture, huge sensor size and clever camera algorithms. Smartphone cameras need big sensors.

This sensor will be used in the next XZ1 Premium / XZ Pro flagship!

Their flagship sensor(s) alone is(are) actually great, and probably the best one out of all used in various phones, however it underachieves due to software.
The point is they sell camera sensors to every OEM out there, for millions of devices and arguably making a huge profit. Making flagship sensor and putting best effort to exploit its capabilities with best possible software while keeping that sensor exclusive would turn OEMs away and make them search for sensors elsewhere (say Sammy for example, since they started producing their own sensors).
There is much more background to everything OEMs do than you, me, and every average Joe out there can imagine.

You let me make profit here, I let you make profit there, simple.

Even LG was doing better with the last flagship and they have mobile phone sales figure comparable to Sony.
This batch of flagships looks promising though. Hoping for the best and looking forward to playing with that ZX2 Compact.

Sony flagships since Z2 can use ISO 12800.
More light than that would damage the sensor.

Thst is why we cant stand to look at sun directly for more than few seconds.
