It's like ALL business, no one would release anything if they thought it wouldn't make a profit! This phone kills 2 birds with 1 stone, and thats why hey will make a huge profit as alot of people will buy it. I've been in sales all my life and you can either market this as a phone, an IPOD or both. Apple have got 3 avenues to explore here, and all of which will be highly sucsessful. Great phone. Great features.

Apparently the contract also includes the requirement for you to name your first born 'Apple' aswell!!! Stay clear of this fashion icon and wait for the SE W960. For the life of me I cannot see how the iPhone is a better option. As with the other W phones the mp3 player will be excellent and you also know what you're getting with their camera and phone capabilities.

Living in Mexico make us very aware of a lot of things that happen in the USA, including everything related to the iPhone. There are rumors that we`ll get the phone late 2008, and I believe it will not be cheap. I hear people in Europe complaining about the price, but I have an answer for you: DON`T BUY IT IF YOU THINK IS EXPENSIVE. That`s it, buy another phone, and stop winning about it, or you could save and buy it, period.

Yes but after all you have said, there are people out there that want the phone, there are people out there willing to pay the money.. not just for the iphone but the tunes to go onto it! People who have the ipod i guess will be interested as it will save them having to carry around a phone and their ipod.. at the end of the day.. Apple are obviously seeing the proposed profits otherwise they wouldnt be going ahead with it...

like i said at the end of the day there are always people willing to pay the dosh!

Steve Jobs claimed it was the thinnest smartphone ever. WRONG (its not even a smartphone for does who think it is, it is a multimedia phone)
he claimed it has a software breakthrough at least five years more advanced than its competitors WRONG again (the iphone even lacks features on basic phones)
iPhone lacks a number of other handheld features that have not already been mentioned and are common in competing devices, including voice dialing, voice recording, instant messaging, a memory card slot, MMS, tethering, A2DP, common Bluetooth file transfer (OBEX), GPS capability, copy and paste, native games, support for MP3 files as ringtones, and it can not even film video. it lacks 3G, HSCSD, HSDPA, and it can be HACKED. other people can take control of this phone!
How usefull are its fancy features such as acceleremeter for auto-rotate? not very. are you going to rotate your phone all day? it has a touchscreen keyboard slower than an actual one. multi input useful? it makes the phone more friendly to your fingers but this feature is present in other phones and there are other fancy features it lacks, TouchFLO, VueFLO, Drag and drop, Vibetonz, handwriting recognition.
all music and videos must be loaded from itunes, so you just lose even more money :-) (iTunes + iPhone = iProfit)
if you want a multimedia phone like the iphone, i say look at the Sony Ericsson W960.
after all i have said if you want to still want to buy one, go ahead spend a fortune on a worthless phone.

the 2 models announced at launch will be pretty steep in price but have heard there will be 2 larger models launced witht the top one being 120G with a pricetag of £1400 gbp (not sure on how accurate that will be)

I strongly disagree with your comments about the phone being for snobs and bought by snobs only. Incase your wrapped up in a little bubble or in a world off your own, the biggest craze not only to hit europe but the world in recent years has been the IPOD! People from all age groups and all backround have got IPOD's. The 'phone' not only cover the mobile phone end it also covers the new IPOD end as well! This phone reguardless of your obvious dislike for apple will be a number 1 seller all over world, it has something for everyone.

Apple has made a mediocre handset for mediocre users (a.k.a. snobs, sub-ordinary managers, non-demanding fashion workers..), who will be it's most significant customers, under any conditions & in order to try to add some "value" in their mediocre lives.
Apple knows that, I know that, you all know that.
                      Simple as that.
                      And that's democracy, too.

                      Best regards.

                        Harlekkin

At no point did I say that resellers are stupid. They will obviously make money on the back of the Iphone. I dont really understand why you said that as it is completely irrelevant to the point I was making.

Re-read my post and you will see that it is Apple's snobbish discrimination I have a problem with.

Oh, and if the news story this thread is attached to is accurate, then you're wrong - it appaers the carriers HAVE been forced by Apple to comply with their stipulations. I quote:

An unpleasant surprise for the customers can be the fact that Apple doesn't allow the carriers to subsidize the handset

So basically, Apple are pricing less affluent people out of the market and thereby discriminating against some of the very people who have made the Ipod and indeed Apple the success it is today.

                        How can you justify that?

If I'm honest, this will probably put me off future apple products, not just the iPhone. At the moment I've got an ipod video, but at the moment the rate of development in the mobile phone industry mean that most likely I will be able to soon get rid of my ipod. Lets face it, when the sony ericsson W960 is released towards the end of the year its going to be able to compete with the iphone... some may even say that the N95 can do that now, but the 8gb of memory will probably give the W960 an edge as well as having a better camera than the iphone and smartphone functionality. I wouldnt pay even 100 for the iphone, I would expect it to be subsidized by the network. Very dissapointing for a phone that, although revolutionary, will be out of date in a years time, and even at the time of release. What this announcement means is that the iphone has been degraded to just a gimmick and is clearly aimed at fashionistas who just want to flash it about, not taking advantage of the revolutionary features that the average consumer might. POINTLESS! I might even go so far as to say the new LG with the 5 megapixel camera would offer a decent alternative, using a similar interface. It seems pretty clear that the iphone should have been released in Europe in June but the reason for the delay was apples' huge demands.Hopefully o2 will find some way around the deal, perhaps offering it on an incredibly cheap tariff, or even a pay as you go deal. Very very very disappointed especially after waiting nearly a year

This is really arrogant for apple, it might be a nice phone but it is not the best out there. they don't want to cut the price and they are releasing in few countries this sounds fish if they can't supply the demand then why sell it now? or are they in for quick cash and that is it? i am from the middle east and i was slightly interested in it, but now no way to get it even if they do sell it here!

Who do Apple think they are? Not allowing carriers to subsidize the iphone so we, the paying customer are forced to pay top dollar for a sub-standard handset that is not as good as the latest high-end offerings from it's rivals. Pricing the less affluent user out of the market is not only snobbery but foolish PR suicide.

Message to Steve Jobs, I can easily afford your phone, but you can stick your overpriced, over-hyped piece of junk where the sun doesn't shine. And I'll be selling my Ipod too. For snobbery like this you don't deserve another penny of my hard earned money. I only hope that others do the same becasue what you are doing is nothing short of discrimination.
