28 March 2018
Google has started blocking Google Apps on “uncertified” Android devices and the search giant has confirmed this with a statement.

I prefer it stock rom (as in, as it comes.) and TWEAK that ROM. because it's still certified. this way it's LIKE having a costum rom. WHILE it's actually stock.

companies like Google operate for profit (whatever it take) if that means blocking your custom rom in hope that you spend money on "pipe dream out of the box" OS that never delivers, so be it. Mobile phone market (especially hardware) stagnates so the software is the only way that companies can compete. Last thing they want is free custom rom that they can't make any $$$ from!

Anonymous, 28 Mar 2018It's Google's mistake that they block uncertified Android. As usual, people jump to conclusions and complain without actually thinking first.

No, it's not bad news or a bad practice. It doesn't affect you as a consumer in any way unless you own over 100 uncertified devices (you don't). You get an exempt and keep using whatever device or ROM you like. What it does however is make it harder for shady manufacturers to sell you counterfeit junk.

No company wants their name to be associated with crappy hardware/software that may not even work properly. Whereas some comanies will outright block and ban such practices, Google simply asks for acknowledgement and does not take anything away. You should be grateful, not angry.

For example, you have a S8 (certified device), and change to a custom ROM. Should work, right?

I see it as a bad practice. If i have a custom rom that has everything i want my way and i have bought apps from the playstore then i should be able to use every playstore service. But maybe i missunderstood the article and this doesn't affect me, since except for the playstore i don't need google services.

And as it has been said you can activate custom rom by sending your device info to white list server...
Also custom rom makers can certifiate their custom Roms directlu with Google and thus makes it easy to users to use their rom versions! No problem in here!

Problem is makers that do not certify their phones and do not care to allow custom Roms but that is not Googles mistake, but the mistake of the phone maker.

Seriously people, stop whining, if you have the brains to develop a custom ROM, or the time to install one on your phone, that one extra step to register it is not going to kill you.
