Huawei has patented a phone with a foldable display

29 March 2018
The device folds like a book with a hinge similar to that of the Surface Book.

A little rough calculus gives that two folded 16:9 displays each 4.7", and something for the fold, would give about a 7" display in 4:3 unfolded - and that does not sound bad at all...

Sure this is first generation. Later we will get three parts with two folds, so we can have a smaller about 16:9 folded and an even larger about 16:9 unfolded.

This would even allow the return of qwerty on the back of one of the thirds, along the lines of this concept device way bay from 2011

Anonymous, 29 Mar 2018no graphene will do.you need a base layer, a light emitting stratus (or three), maybe a uv filter layer, a touch sensitive layer, and a protective layer, graphene is amazing but you can't make all things out of graphene.

I applaud companies like ZTE for making the gamble in producing a phone with multiple screens. I think we're years away from "flawless" execution of a phone that can double as a phone and a tablet, but we're slowly bridging that gap.

Lots of foldable patents, where are the actual device? When are we going to see them?

Flexible IC's till now are for relatively "simple", low cost circuits

That technology is not interesting. OLED displays are foldable, the screen protector can be made out of plastic or another easily foldable material. A SOC can be made of plastic and foldable too.
I don't mean folding it liek paper but i expected more than folding it in half.
Folding it in half is no technological advancement whatsoever.

I guess that origami display concept thing I saw years ago is not gonna happen. Well, 2nd gen foldable displays like Galaxy X and that Huawei one is only limited to one fold on that one line.

I'm expecting a foldable display that can be folded like paper. Yes I may have damaged the structural integrity but it is the extent of display foldability that I wanted. Not some supported hinges that helps fold the display.
