Sunday debate: What matters more - performance or efficiency

What do you prioritize when getting a new phone - a screamer of a device or one that's power efficient?

Sort by:

matters if its flagship grade efficiency or entry level one... big difference. But efficiency means better performance after all, if its about chip size...

      efficiency, without doubts.

        Efficient performance OR performing efficiently.

        Both are interdependent.
        Performance great but without any efficiency ( eg. Great speed yet short lived battery). And Efficiency can be great but it would not mean a great performance( eg. Great battery life but absolutely slow for tasks).

        It would be acceptable if - lag free performance coupled with a decent battery life. That's what I mean by - Efficient performance OR performing efficiently.

        Striking right balance is what matters rather than bieng at one of the ends.

          More performance is needed for PUBG

                Performance equals efficiency and vice versa. Does a Porsche 911 or a Tesla have a range of only 150 miles? Exactly so why the likes of Apple and Samsung compromise efficiency for performance while you can have both as Huawei recently has shown with their P20 pro and 4000mAh battery?

                  Balance of both. Best speed is of no use, if the battery doesn't last a full day of use (like Galaxy Note8). 3000mAh is a joke on the fastest SoC phones. Even SD 62X based mid rangers have 4000mAh and 5000mAh models.

                    Efficiency all the way! SD 625 will get me through another 2 years easily in both performance and battery life.

                      Performance and efficiency are just as important as: Robustness, ability to replace battery, broad range of features that should include - removable battery, dual sim, micro-sd, 3.5mm headphone jack, great cameras, easy to repair.
                      That no manufacturers now produce a phone with the above features speaks volumes about how LITTLE they listen to customers.

                          Let's take an example on the S9,
                          Standard mode has the cores unaffected (2.7+1.8)
                          Power saving mode kills off 700 MHz from the M3, and 400 MHz to A55 (2+1.4)
                          Super Power saving Cuts off another 600 MHz off the M3, and 500 MHz to the A55, and underclocks memory to 1600 mhz. (1.4+0.9)

                            I am a developer, and when I code something, I do the most I can have it the best and most efficient code I can get, true, I am human, and occassional events (Period, preparations, shitty mood, etc) do take their toll on my preformance, but I don't let them take over, I will do the best I can.

                              Power means nothing if you cannot use it for at least a decent amount of time I rarely find myself in a situation in which I would like my phone to have more processing power, I am more inclined to the efficiency side of things.

                                  Really though. This is SO accurate.

                                    I voted preformance.
                                    Don't get me wrong guys; I value efficiency too. I want my phone to last the longest WHILE being really powerful.

                                      It depends:

                                      Use available resources efficiently = An efficient user.
                                      Squeeze out all possible ability from the resources = A heavy user.

                                      Performance is what people need in their every moment.
                                      Efficiency is what people need during limits: non accessible power outlet, less time to charge than to leave, more time out of place, continuous use of multi resource hungry tasks.

                                      So, In smartphone matter:
                                      Those who use the handset as their full time assistant need "Both"
                                      Those who use the handset as their gaming machine need "Performance"
                                      Those who use the handset as their telephony and messaging machine need "Efficiency"

                                      Others need 50% of each

                                        The debate is absurd like always. There will be performance only when there will be efficiency.
