See how the US version of Samsung's latest flagship performs, compared to its international sibling.

I am very happy to have my SM-G965F/DS on Exynos.

When I had the SnapDragon powered Glaxy Note 4 it was a coal ON FIRE... the CPU got so hot that I could barely touch the screen, and it throttled down heavily at past 80°C.

On the contrary I know the Note 4 with Exynos was a far better energy efficient experience. I've battled the Note 4 tendency to overheat for almost 2 years, after which it gave up the ghost, probably out of the many heat cycles that cracked the solder ball joints.

The S9+ with Exynos is a totally refreshing experience... just gets lukewarm in the heaviest tasks and the battery life is thrice the time of my Note 4 Snapdragon.

And probably I suspect even snappier... because sigle core performance I believe still counts most of everything until now, especially not for a video gamer like me, mostly using the phone for PIM and media (both consumption and production).

      Imperator Neubaticus, Poltergeist, fairnsquare.

What you guys have asked seems like a simple question, but its actually a very complex issue. Now there are two categories to this question: Relative Battery Life and Real-Life Battery Life.

Now Relative Battery Life is a good way to gauge battery life amongst two different devices. If you do a benchmark, such as watching a 720p video at 200nits, and you determine one device dies after 5.0 hours and another dies after 6.0 hours, then you can conclude Device B has +20% more battery life than Device A. In fact, you can do this to 500 devices and form a hierarchy of battery life which is very useful in a sense. However, it doesn't translate at all to what you can expect in the real-world daily usage.

Now, then there's "Real-Life" Battery Life benchmarks. This sounds great in practice, but can be flawed in theory. Why? Well, what is a daily experience for you might be completely different to someone else. So the benchmark results may not be applicable to some people. And on top of that, you cannot have such a linear hierarchy for battery life. And to top it off the ecosystem is constantly evolving, where Apps are getting more efficient and linear yet they are also getting resource intensive, bloated, and data-leaky at the same time. The smartphone experience of the Samsung NOTE (single-threaded) is different to the NOTE 4 (multi-threaded), which different to the Note9 (64-bit hetero-threaded).

      What would I recommend?
I would say the best solution for people as a group, and individuals is two-fold. Run the best balanced Battery Life "Relative" battery life benchmark. At the moment that is Futuremark's PCMark Work 2.0 Battery Life benchmark. Then find out where your current device (eg Samsung S7/Exynos 8890) lays on this test and find out where your next device lays (eg Samsung S9+/QSD 845). For instance, it might be 7.78 vs 8.13 hours. So now we know relative, that there's an increase of +5% battery life in your next purchase. And if you run your own personal "Real-Life" Battery Life benchmark, where you make calls/txt/listen to music/social media/web browse/stream videos, you can make an accurate corroboration between the two. Especially if your Samsung S7 is getting you 1.2 days of battery life, then you can estimate to a high certainty that the Samsung S9+ will get you 1.26 days, or roughly 1.3 days, of battery life.

Long story short, just go through the below article and understand how bad the Exynos version of S9/S9+ is both CPU and GPU wise. Unlike older version, this time Samsung really fcukd up with the Exynos version.

Kd10, 08 Apr 2018You guys battery life results seem very odd. Virtually all ... moreExactly!
I have been using the S9+ Exynos version for the last one month and the batterylife is simply bad. Even with basic tweaks like cache cleaning, factory re-settings, setting up like a new phone.. nothing actually helped. Even after an OTA update on 30th March, it did not do anything regarding batterylife. Then I came across XDA and few more forums where its evident that batterylife on the Exynos is worse than the SD and by a big margin and also the performance is below the SD variant. Dug more into it, and lab testers like Anandtech clearly shows how the Exynos is performing poorly in batterylife and performance.
A well-written article in androidcentral clarifies that its very unlikely that Samsung will push OTA to improve batterylife on the Exynos as it is seems intended.

I just bought S9+ 845 edition because its the only version we can get in China... the battery life is satisfactory, but could be better. I also compared S9+ with my old iPhone X. Yes, if you are a heavy gamer, S9+ lasts longer because it can handle longer screen on time, but the standby drain is heavy for S9+. So standby only, iPhone can last 4 days easy, but S9+ drains in 3 days tops.

              2. What do we need all that performance since the Iphone 8 has a 720p screen ! and the the multitasking is a joke on these devices.

It obvious that 9810 has much better CPU but it did dissapoint in GPU compartment. Looks like it is not much more powerful than S8 g71mp20. Hoping S10 will change that.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with gsmarena's battery test. They test at 200 nits for all browsing and video. It is fair and square. Don't look at endurance rating, it could be bit complicated for most people. Which method of test do you recommend then? I guess you'll come up with none.

We should not forget though that the s9 recently had an update which didn't really specify what it did. The difference between this review and the others is that this one is released after the patch, it could be that they improved battery life on the exynos variant with that patch. Would love to see that tested!

None of what you have said stacks up in real world tests. I haven't seen any real proof that the SD 845 lasts longer. In fact it has been shown to have worse battery life than the SD 835.

What do people here expect? This is GSMArena, they are not experts. I've been criticising their Battery Endurance tests for a while now, and while it is "okay" it is not "great" indicator.

Anandtech is diving deeper to find out the problems with the QSD 845 and the Exynos 9810.
                                      What we know so far:
                                      - QSD 845 has BIG problems with memory latency (very slow single-core performance for random floating object tests = very important)
                                      - Exynos 9810 is has power delivery limitations and cannot sustain its peak performance and can barely even touch it
                                      - Exynos 9810 max performance is higher than QSD 845 max performance. But sustained performance is equal, however the QSD 845 uses less battery in doing so
                                      - QSD 845 despite its issues is still 10% - 15% faster than the QSD 835, whilst using 0% - 5% less battery, on top of having a 30% faster GPU
                                      - QSD 845 is roughly 15% - 25% faster than the QSD 820, whilst using 5% - 10% less battery, on top of having a 45% faster GPU

                                      ...so conclusions?
                                      - It seems like not Samsung nor Qualcomm have really caught up to the Apple A10 in single-core performance, let alone the Apple A11-Bionic
                                      - Both chips are almost as fast as the A11-Bionic when it comes to Total Performance/Multicore
                                      - The Exynos 9810 GPU is slightly faster than the QSD 820, Tegra X1, QSD 835, and A11. The new QSD 845 holds the GPU King record
                                      - Both chips seem to have bad/immature drivers and software. We should be seeing an overall 20% performance gain over the QSD 835, with less 10% battery drain, and the expected 30% GPU gain. This would put it cleanly over the Apple A10, and a respectable distance from the Apple A11.
                                      - Synthetic and Real-world performance differs immensely. And if the Application is not coded properly, none of it really matters, for instance:
QSD 845 can now emulate PSP, GameCube, and Wii at relatively Full-Speed. It can also emulate the PS2 demanding games like God of War around 13fps. The iPhone 8 Plus has a smaller resolution, much faster A11-Bionic chipset, and better low-level native software (compared to Android)... so we should be expecting full speed PS2 emulation on the iPhone. However, because the Application isn't coded properly it can't emulate any PS2 games properly, and it can barely do PSP and GameCube... but Wii still causes issues.
