ZTE's US ban may cost company its Android license as well

18 April 2018
The information comes courtesy of a Reuters report, which cites a source saying the ban means ZTE may not be able to use Google's mobile OS in its devices.

Anonymous, 18 Apr 2018They could just use lineage osummmmm... it's not a stand alone OS, it's an offshoot of Android. Same rules apply

This doesn't mean ZTE can't use Android. It would limit their ability to have the Google services, kind of like what they do in China. There is of course the carcass of Brew MP or Windows 10, and Tiezen (formerly Simbian) as "options".... none of which are good ones.

I am really happy to hear this they deserve it

If I were in charge of ZTE directing company, I would definitely swap Android with Something new. Another Move, sooner, better than later.
            Reasons:

1- 7 years later ZTE must prepare itself for Android X which mean only Y and Z are profitable for the company. Since then, many people who focused on Alphabetically magic of Android will say: still stick to a structure from 2009? Now it is 2025 and we need something new to use for tasks.

2- Tizen is not completely Korean as intel has hands in development. So, at right time another sanction will occur.

3- Building up a new OS from the absolute scratches will need at least 5 years to grow up. ZTE in other case need a competitive instruction set against ARM. ARM has American hands in it and has the potential of further sanctions.

I would definitely used my 74000+ work force as 4 separate division.

            Div. 1 - 4000 knowledgeable for R&D.
Div. 2 - 10000 talented for further software development.
Div. 3 - 20000 already capable to develop apps, make in house version of popular apps and games.
Div. 4 - Remaining work force to make smartphone for other not so well-known brands which need their logo on any handsets.

If they want to imagine that in a couple of years, US will be Iran's friend, they are signing their resignation and are in charge of 74000+ unemployed people directly.

AnonD-669148, 18 Apr 2018This only prove that the world must stop being dependant on... moreEXACTLY! One country controlling all major OS'es on both mobile and desktop is concerning. There has to be a non-US option for people elsewhere.
I really hope this trade-war between US and China will make non-US companies realize the importance of Independence regarding tech.
I know of Sailfish OS and Tizen, but we need a free and open source mobile OS that's not tied to any specific company or country.

Oops. ZTE doesn't deserve that. I really hope this kick start development of a new OS. We badly need one that would be widely supported while integrating open source Android code and app compatibility.

Dude, 18 Apr 2018Does this count for Nubia as well? No, since Nubia broke off completely from the parent company and ZTE is not major shareholder anymore.

Who's law did ZTE broke when it sold phones to Iran? China's? Iran's?
If it was a national american law that it broke, maybe it also broke a national law in Somalia or any other country... Why there's a 3rd party meddling into China's and Iran's relations?
Someone can't handle a political ad on social networks during elections, and cries for a few years: foreign meddling in internal affairs!... while meddling all over the globe in other countries' internal business...

That is exactly why Nokia was force-downed. So that an "American" OS can take over mobiles.

If Google did this, its gonna be their decline then.

Companies should combine and come up with another neutral mobile OS.

I feel so bad for ZTE

                                        Sorry but Android is OpenSource.
They can use it but they will not be able to use google support/updates and google apps/store.
US gov cant ban them from using it, even google cant do that because its open source system, whole point of os software is that they can be used by anyone without any strict limitations, even license of it dont say that you cant use it because of some gov/spying problems in US that you have.
