Playing notch copycat makes you look uninspired, a brainless follower. Granted that's literally the entire industry this year.       The Lg Amoled didn't have perfect blacks anyway, even according to gsma's own testing. And ridiculous ir/burn in as well.

          Without it you lose screen estate which you could otherwise use.

          Now the space is used for notifications/bars w/t losing looks (due to the black backround it looks symmetrical).

          Do you bezel lovers ever think?

                it gives the unbalanced top and bottom.
                it's about manufacturing cost, will get better in time.

                it's hidden only if you watch videos and play games.
                it's there most of time.

                to hide the notch is from ROM-end, app developers don't need to change anything.

                          If the notch isn't absolutely black (but rather very dark grey), then even IPS screen will be able to hide it.

If it's really all about maximizing the screen real estate then it would be much more effective to put everything from the notch in the bottom bezel, Mi Mix style; this way the top portion of the screen would be fully usable instead being a weird cut-off status bar. The only place where a top notch makes any sense so far is on the iPhone X, since they almost entirely removed the chin.

                            Also, moving the status bar into the top bezel area doesn't really do that much to save screen space because the bar is hidden a lot of the time anyway. Not worth the hassle of making app developers work around irregularly shaped displays imo.

                                    Looks fine, black out the notch if it bothers you that much. What Lg really needs to work on are their announcement to actual release times and the timely release of software updates.

                                      this is the best approach, you get invisible status bar that shows informations outside the "main screen" area.
                                      so more screen real estate, status bar on the main screen is like a dead area.
