And no, apple doesn't have "state of the art" hardware. I mean they couldn't compare to arm vendors like TI or Samsung or Qualcomm.
The "curated" appstore is not where the users are given the best but are instead babied around by apple on uncle jobs instructions.
And just to repeat, no memory manipulation/ system wide control api, hence it isn't a smartphone.

The facts are simple, the iphone lacks the basic framework which makes a device smart. It is not a real smartphone. That is until it supports userspace memory mapping and system wide control apis. The proper code support, file management/transfers come later. The reason most people buy it is because it's shiny. Not for its abilities. As an embedded system, it comes with the best hardware at the time, but apple restricts/cripples it.

Two scenarios:
1. If it isn't as good as current top Android device, then you cry.
2. If it is better than current Android device, don't worry, Android phones release every quarter. iPhone 5 will be beat by the following week of release. You cry a week later.

That's why lot of people JAILBREAK their iphones. Then you have best of both worlds and that world is much better and bigger than what android can offer. Jailbreak community is HUGE!

Any device which abandons file management is one that cuts out the concept which made the computers so smart. The iphone is no different. It's marketed to those who are pretty clueless about phones. You ask what is the use of customization, well have you ever tried apps like SwiftKey or swype keyboards. They happen to be far better than any of the stock keyboards on both the iphone or any android. The only thing iOS has is far better games. Do you have apps like tasker which allow full automation of the phone? Even on the galaxy s/s2 the touchwiz underlying framework is pretty stable and light. It has everything from file management to wifi direct built in. It can also hardware decode several formats. And I have yet to see any galaxy flagship lag. You might find it hard to believe but smoothness is not exclusive to the iphone. And do remember, iphone smoothness and shininess comes from the fact that it is severely restricted.
