Where do you think that lower noise and higher details come from? Magic? It's the monochrome camera that far outperforms the RGB sensor."

And where did I disagree with that? Point it out to me?
I know monochrome sensor is better for lowlight photography than rgb sensor, as it detects broader amount of light due to the lack of a color filter array, which is present in an rgb sensor.

If Xiaomi makes two phones, one with and the other without monochrome sensor, rest of the hardware and software being identical, then obviously the first phone WILL have BETTER low light image quality.
"Talking to you now is like talking to a flat-earth believer. You just refuse to accept basic facts about the technology."
I CLEARLY mentioned earlier that I am NOT debating about the sensor itself here. If you can't read that, don't blame me.
BTW, the review CLEARLY also mentioned: " the night shots are of poor quality, no matter the mode you use."
You chose to ignore this, because it doesn't support your argument, and yet compare me to flat earth believers when it is YOU that sounds like them.
I already mentioned that I compared the image quality of Mi 5s plus with S7 edge, and no, it doesn't have a better low light camera, DESPITE having a monochrome sensor, which means it COULD be, but ISN'T better.

Well, i'm buying this phone because of its outstanding camera and performance. Not to scratch, burn and bend. HAHAHA!

First of all, I never stated the Nokia 8 outperformed the competition. The Nokia 8 cameras were awful. I asked you to compare the P20 Pro and Mi 5s Plus to the competition.

Secondly, you're literally quoting the part of the review that is saying you get LESS NOISE AND MORE DETAIL in stereo mode (i.e. RGB sensor in conjunction with the monochrome). Where do you think that lower noise and higher details come from? Magic? It's the monochrome camera that far outperforms the RGB sensor.

Talking to you now is like talking to a flat-earth believer. You just refuse to accept basic facts about the technology.
Whatever camera you have, if you switch the RGB sensor to a monochrome one, you get a far more light-sensitive camera that generates more details, less noise and less highlight clipping.

I checked the photo comparison tool before replying to you for the very first time, comparing the Nokia 8 and S8, and you were wrong. I checked it again with two phones from 2016 and the Mi 5s plus isn't even as good, let alone better than the S7 edge, and it was released 7 months AFTER the S7 edge. Even the Mi 5s plus review mentions it:
"In night scenes the Stereo mode is of little help, but we suggest you keep it set to on as the images still offer more detail and less noise compared to the otherwise uninspiring quality in normal mode. Because of the f/2.2 aperture and the small sensor pixels, the night shots are of poor quality, no matter the mode you use."

At the set time they were released they outperformed the competition.

And I gave you two examples, so don't go "it's the only one" like I didn't. The Mi 5s Plus has a dual camera with a monochrome sensor. I didn't think I had to type out every little detail for you to grasp things. Usually people can think for themselves and fill in blanks.

As for the performance of the S8, S9, Note 8, Pixel 2 and iPhone X, the monochrome cameras outperform them handily in lower light. Go to the comparison tool.

You initially said, "The best low-light performing smartphone cameras are ABSOLUTELY using monochrome sensors."
So I asked you WHICH ones are you talking about, that are the best?
The P20 I already mentioned, I know it has one of the best low light cameras, yep, but it is the ONLY one.
There are others that aren't using it, like the S8/+,S9/+,Note 8, Pixel 2/Xl, iPhone X and still have some of the best low light cameras out there, especially Samsung's and Google's flagships.
I'm not debating about the sensor here.
The Mi 5s doesn't even have a dual camera, lol.

nigerianprince, 02 May 2018OK. One of them is P20 Pro, the other one is?What, you're expecting a list? It's a basic fact of the sensor technology. I just detailed how big an RGB-sensor would have to be to compete with a small monochrome sensor in terms of light sensitivity. The best low-light smartphone cameras are monochrome.

Huawei, Xiaomi and Motorola have all been using monochrome sensors with good results. If you want to look at examples, the P20 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 5s are both good examples, though they all use smaller sensors and/or pixels as is typical of a secondary camera.

To get similar low-light performance to the P20 Pro main camera (with its big 1/1.78" sensor), a monochrome sensor only needs to be 1/3.5". That's smaller than any smartphone camera sensor today. Had the primary sensor instead been monochrome, the low-light performance would likely have been better than it is for 1" sensor cameras like the Sony RX100 or Canon G7.

Now naturally, it wouldn't have been a very fun camera to have if you couldn't capture any colours with it. But as a secondary camera, a monochrome sensor makes perfect sense and is incredibly useful.

Monochrome sensors are up to 4x more light sensitive, have a far higher dynamic range and less highlight clipping. You can also get a higher resolution sensor while maintaining these sensor qualities. It is NOTHING like having a B&W filter.

So yes, a monochrome sensor is far more useful on a smartphone. Because, tell me, what is the number one weakness of smartphone cameras? It certainly isn't the field of view. It's LOW-LIGHT PERFORMANCE. And the only way to get decent low-light performance is by using a monochrome sensor.

Did you never wonder why all night surveillance cameras always use monochrome sensors?
