But sold it after I read all the reports on Huawei and generally all Chinese manufacturers. Now I'm rocking an iPhone because I need my privacy. And I need my data to be secure.

Android is not to be trusted with any real, personal details; but Android + non-European or non-US manufacturers is a big, red flag, and should be avoided at all costs.

What ZTE did was wrong - so financially punish them, but don't stop them from doing business (if the United States can go after ZTE, but turn a blind eye to Germany doing business with Iran? that's being a hypocrite!)
I don't support Iran's regime, nor North Korea's .... but I don't support punishing one Chinese Company, when there are other Companies just as guilty in Europe.

I doubt people in the US and Europe would buy a ZTE anyway. This is a brand made for Chinese and Indian markets.
The best way to tell someone how to choose a good android phone in 2018 is to tell them: "Don't buy anything with a NOtch!" :))
This includes ALL china brands and lately LG, but they are a disaster when it comes to updates anyway..

This is not idiotic, imperialist BS like a lot of Trump detractors may (perhaps rightly) accuse him of. Frankly, this mess predates his administration by some time.
It's simple. The United States has made use of one of the tools open to ANY sovereign state: it placed sanctions on Iran. Sanctions would not be effective if any two-bit third party were allowed to act as a middleman to the sale and violate them. This is what ZTE did in effect to get into this whole mess - they bought American tech subject to these stipulations, and then violated them.
When you can't play nicely with things you're given, they get taken away - and I should mention ZTE has already had a chance to fix this - they got a slap on the wrist when they did the deed, with the only obligation being cleaning house to make sure a repeat was not to happen. ZTE failed to honour these terms of agreement, and so the punitive clauses are kicking in.
America doesn't have to let anyone use its things, least of all a company spitting in its face. I doubt you would let someone take something of yours if they came and spit on you. Plus, for sanction to be effective, there has to be reprecussion for violating them.
AKA: ZTE did this to themselves. They purchased in confidence, violated the conditions of that purchase, were given terms to avoid serious punitive action, and failed to abide by those as well. The result? They're being punished.
China, barring nationalist stupidity, has no legitimate reason to suddenly try banning American tech. ZTE didn't play by the rules, they got burned. There was no prejudice in this agreement against ZTE, it is legitimate, fair economic and business policy. ZTE violated it anyhow. China would probably complain, but they would have no actual legitimate basis to do so.
