Sunday debate: Buttons vs Gestures

20 May 2018
As Android P introduces new iPhone X like gestures, in this weeks Sunday Debate we deliberate which are better - hardware buttons or gestures?

Sort by:

Buttons (either capacitive or mechanicel) are good. Gestures (if done right) are good.
There is one thing that is obviously evil: on-screen buttons. They steal our screen estate, they require additional swipe for activation in full-screen apps. They give false positives when swype typing. If the gestures will kill them, I'm all in for the gestures.

Bring back the D-Pad at the bottom for precision fast forwarding in vids, adjust equaliser and gaming.

                In terms of upgrade:
                Lollipop - big
                Marshmallow - small
Nougat - quite big (due to split screen multitasking)
                Oreo - small
P (Idk the name) - seems big (because of new gesture-based actions)

If history isn't wrong, it will be the same thing for future versions of Android.

Buttons, because phone gestures interfere with app gestures or app content sometimes, it's impractical to only have gestures for everything.

I have an old Nokia N9 that was all swipe, no home button. And it was very intuitive to use. I miss that Meego system. Gestures only can work great. It just depends on how "natural" it feels to the user.

Steering a bit away from the topic, but still related to it...
                        - I think it'd still be a better solution than the notch.

I dont mind gesture-based navigation as long as it's quick and intuitive.

LG Superfan, 20 May 2018If the gestures are nice and fluid its great to use them an... moreHw or sw keys makes no difference, as it blocks possible screen content, with slight difference - that you can change sw ones and you can hide them. But to use them again you got to slide from the edge anyway, so why not use it from the start...
Also difference between tapping and sliding is big, its like doing a simple move for which you would need to tap multiple times. It may be not so great now, but surely will be in future and apple went and started new trend again.
Would welcome such thing even in tablets, be it on ios, android or windows.

This poll is misleading. It should be keys vs gestures, not hardware keys vs gestures. I personally love keys - soft keys not the ugly hardware keys.

According to gigantism mod! Gestures is good solution IMO, combination of both is really great solution in beautiful Sunday..

If the gestures are nice and fluid its great to use them and feels better than buttons (on screen and hardware) I used my friends iPhone X and wished google brought those nice and fluid gestures to android, the one coming to android P dont seem as nice as iOS especially app drawer gesture and that back buttons looks odd with those gestures
Buttons have there own importance especially for those non tech savvy peoples I mean just imagine explaning an elder person to swipe up for recent apps and then swipe up again to see the app drawer

Trump Fan 1980, 20 May 2018 Having a dedicated camera button rocks. I was just thinkin... moreYou can go with a Xperia instead. You don't have to suffer that much only to have a feature that's supposed to be implemented by every single OEM in the first place.
And I can't see the Bixby button being a good shutter key, because when you put the phone in landscape mode, it's usually the right-side buttons that will be on the top, so the Bixby button would be on the bottom when in landscape, making it an awkward thing to use for taking pictures.

Well, I don't recommend using it either. Clicking it introduces some minor shake that can still affect the image quality.
