I agree that gestures are useful, and can be great. BUT we're simply not ready to remove hardware buttons. I would rather have a chunkier phone with a power/lock button, than have a prettier, slimmer phone, without one. It just feels intuitive.

Alien , 20 May 2018I've been using gesture controls on android for at least 6 ... more Sometimes GSM ARENA makes spelling errors and grammatical errors, and they rarely edit their material after it's published. I still put of this lame fact for whatever reason.

Having a dedicated camera button rocks. I was just thinking about remapping a certain Bixby button to accommodate a new found camera button. Wish me luck you guys '_' .

They could just give all slide gestures from the bottom depending like on direction with a little menu in which you can still change direction for shown function. How natural would be that. And you could hold your phone naturally and tight while doing that.

Great idea and truly futuristic, like using mouse and edge on desktop, having edges predefined and with just one option is however so apple-ish as their OS. Thats more like treasure hunting. The best way is to see or feel what it will do before it happens. No need to show full menu but at least give options when sliding from the edge, whatever edge.
Screen touch with pressure feedback(for tactile perception on screen) could be best tech to improve that touch we miss to control the phone even without eyes, but only if you won't get ''treasure'', but a choices with sliding instead.

The button I missed the most is the music control button.. Changing music without even looking.. Gold..
That said, I prefer button than gestures..

On-screen buttons with gestures would be great like swipe from the home button right or left to switch between apps but without removing the multitasking button.

AnonD-632062, 20 May 2018Sometimes, there is a middle ground between these 2 options... moreTrue.
I prefer the UI that I made (in 2011), which was somewhere in-between.
Gestures was used for navigation and interaction, but on-screen buttons were also key.

I really don't like the half-measure that the iPhone X takes. It's not properly baked-in yet.
I think 2019, or more likely 2020 is when we will see Gesture-first UI hit mainstream, or be properly implemented. Google's working on it now, but again, it takes a few years for their vision to come to people's palms.

iam still happy with iphone 6s button or oneplus 3t costumize gesture and button

Nzi97, 20 May 2018I'll take both, virtual button for efficiency and switch to... moreNever used buttons since 2013. You have to press a certain place of the screen. That's the most inefficient thing ever. With gestures you have a range of ways/places to achieve it. Missed button presses on those tiny devices frequently, almost never did miss gestures.

The feature was long overdue and it's telling that apple had to do it first before android was to put it over. Been uing gmd+root for years because of this basic functionality error from google's part.

I've been using gesture controls on android for at least 6 years now. First with Go Launcher and in the last 4 years with Buzz Launcher. What do you mean iPhone x like gestures?
You mean iPhone is copying Android.. Not that I care, but don't lie to people GSMA. That's not professional at all..

Samsung phones with there Home buttons were alot more easier to us,but the swipe buttons can sometimes be annoying, with applications with controls at the bottom,i use playerpro music player on my galaxy phones, but now with the swipe buttons it as got more annoying to use, when playing a song and then going back to the home screen,i swipe up and end up missing the full song and sometimes have to try a few times before i get it right and end up back at the home screen,so now search for another music player so the controls are not at the bottom of Galaxy phones and can get to home screen easier now

Sometimes, there is a middle ground between these 2 options:

On Screen Software buttons (as opposed to gestures). Perfect for customisable navigation, rather than relying on unintuitive gestures that require a learning curve.
