i now lean towards mid-spec and replacing when I feel like it. I have a Samsung s9 plus and in all honesty, im scared to use it outside, even with a case on - the all glass body (apart from frame), tall screen ratio makes it a difficult phone to handle but i'll admit the tech/screen is truly gorgeous - but it's heavy, slippy and it cost an absolute fortune. Step forward the P20 lite - third of the price of s9 plus, great 1080p screen, light weight, decent cameras, processing power and a 'looker' - it's actually all I need in a phone and I've learnt my lesson = top spec doesn't equate to more enjoyment

          Buying cheap flagships for common people every year or every two years for poor folks. wasting money on midranges it's just gonna cost more money on the long turn and of course stress. I had once a midrange phone from htc I sold it after a few months due to lags and horrid camera performances that's what makes a midrange phone a midrange.

                    I think it's much better to buy the previous years flagship for two reasons. 1) You get it at a cheaper price (sometimes as little as the current years midrange) and 2) The phone lasts a lot longer than buying the average midrange.

                    Using this strategy, I've been using my Xperia Z3 Compact for about three years and it's still going strong. I just might be able to go another year or two before having to upgrade.

                            That is one thing I always try to teach people when talking about phone. And if your budget is limited, you can still buy a flagship, then you just have to look for an older one. 3 year old flagships still have superior built, materials and often displays, something underrated when buying a phone, and I don‘t talk about resolution, I talk about image quality. They are also speedier than those pure A53 SoCs, and the camera is sometimes better as well. I once switched from an iPhone 5 (2012, 650€) To a Xperia M4 Aqua (2015, 300€) and I got much worse built quality with plastic only, a worse display, bigger bezels, a way worse camera with always unsharp photos and taking 5s to take a picture (2,5s after Marshmallow update, still way too long), shorter update support (!), a worse user experience because that thing overheated and lagged, much worse GPU, and many more things. The only thing better was the front camera and the water resistance, but those are gimmicks when comparing to how this phone massively failed to get the basics right.

                            The last sentence of the article is the thing you always should remember when buying a phone, and maybe also a car, a TV, a laptop, ...

                              Mid range don't offer hdr, p3,displays performance ,faster LTE speeds and the camera as in iPhone x. What about that

                                I use a flagship for 3 years before replacing. Flagships come with much better SoCs, storage speed, cameras, and miscellaneous amenities over midrangers. Even now in 2018, for example, a flagship from 2015 toting a SD810 (A57/A53) is still faster than most midrangers still using only A53 cores.

I can't say I am partial to anything but a top of range middle ranger though. I owned one with Snapdragon 635 SoC, a Motorola Moto. There was constant slow down with video games I play such as Gallaga Wars and others, so I returned the phone.

                                        Its funny how a lot of people reacted to the concrete example (one year vs two) and not to idea itself... Don't take it literally and better explain what you would prefer, to buy mid-range more often or prefer to wait a little more and invest into a flagship. How often you would change your phone is just a relative therm.
                                        I've also prefer to change them faster (once a year) and usually want to find the best mid-range (also cheaper to change the display), but sometimes I'm also attracted to the flagships and maybe the next one will be a flagship... I hope!
