03 June 2018
Before smartphones, PocketPC and Windows Mobile was popular. In the smartphone era, however, Microsoft failed to capture the market.

sadh, 03 Jun 2018Nokia sold 10.5million Lumias in a quarter. That was HUGE. ... moreAgree. Nokia did what they could. It's Microsoft's fault WF/WM has died.
Remember Nokia's frustration at Microsoft with slow development when they created best on the market devices at the time and 'pull' huge development in terms of Apps and features.
Their market share went to double digits in most European markets and started to grow in Asia too. And at the end of the day Nokia had to sell phone business. What happened next we know. Microsoft 'unintentionally' killed another purchase. Without their own platform and neglecting Windows for PC development in many areas they might face bleak future.
they too much 'in the clouds' I guess.

What is this talk about users needing to update their phone to get newer versions of Windows Phone?
The same was true for most android devices at the time as well.

Lack of Apps and lack of high end devices from other major brands becides Nokia, that wasn't even a major brand at the time, was the problem.
The fact that users had to get new devices to get newer versions of the OS, was and is in most cases but the very high end devices is standard outside of iOS, where there are only high end devices the standard.

Why Microsoft didn't do a better job of gettings app developers on board, is the real question.
They had the financial capacity. And they knew that the mobile market was important.
Windows Phone/Windows Mobile 10, was fine as an OS.
The Nokia units were pretty good, but they had a design that wasn't typical, so it wasn't for everyone.
But the lack of some to a lot of essential apps, depending on where one lived (local essential apps), made it almost impossible to use as ones only mobile OS.

It was a simple problem with windows os. First the tile ui sucks. They could have solve it by redesign the ui layout. 2nd apps support. Collaboration with Google play store will solve it. The ceo of Microsoft Mobile at that time was horrible at what he was doing.

WP7 were simple, fast and predictable. WP8 were way laggy but *20 Lumia series were amazing and actually were the best that time. 920&1020 still great in photos. But then... M$ slowed down updates, and from update to update wp/wm became more and more laggy. Then m$ bought Lumias production and after that they became crap. Slow, bad cameras, overpriced, cheapest plastic even in flagships. WP were way better in many sides. And clowd-tied. Android and iOs took a lot from it. M$ crushed own diamond by their hands.

Crocop, 03 Jun 2018I still have fully working Samsung Omnia on Windows mobile ... more"I mean, as far as I know Youtube for example never got an official app, and I really can't understand why."

lol, it had an official app, understand why:

"Google and Microsoft are at it again. The just-released and jointly developed YouTube app for Windows Phone is now being blocked by Google." - zdnet

"Google blocks Microsoft's new YouTube Windows Phone app" - theverge

People don't want to use Windows OS everywhere like apple OS hence it never took off and Android is much more easier to navigate and suited for mobiles and tablets ,I personally like my mobile os and my desktop os is to be different

              RIP windows phone.

Kiyasuriin, 03 Jun 2018Exactly. Nothing will ever defeat Android!Well, until PC goes into pocket. Though there are things you can do only on android, there are some you can do only on W10. It will be way different from old WM - many devices - one os.

sadh, 03 Jun 2018Nokia sold 10.5million Lumias in a quarter. That was HUGE. ... moreMy friend had a 920 and it was awesome. Heck I would even call it beautiful. I love how the OS looked but it was kinda laggy and quite full of bugs. But the device itself was really nice. The limitedness of the apps and some functionalities is a huge bummer though.

Well, story continues, with W10 and andromeda device. Or story begins?

Thats because google didnt want to release a Youtube app or any google app and more over they forced microsoft to remove third party apps from their store

I still have fully working Samsung Omnia on Windows mobile 6.0, I believe. And yeah, first of all touchscreen was a disaster on that thing, OS was laggy all over the place (I can understand that, it was 2008 phone afterall), and only old java apps work on it. Also, MS screwed up by not updating it in any way, I believe it only went up to Windows Mobile 6.5 or something like that, but it is impossible to find that version anywhere today, so you are stuck with 6.1 forever if you want to use this "disaster" phone today. But yeah, main reason why Windows Phone and Windows Mobile failed is probably because of Microsoft, and lack of apps. I mean, as far as I know Youtube for example never got an official app, and I really can't understand why. Same goes with some other major apps. Stuff like this are the main reasons why it all failed, in my opinion.

As much as I liked Windows on PC, I never liked WM. They were always full of bugs and had battery problems, not to mention that the software for it was almost zero.
I was using Symbian when I first used a WM phone and I still didn't like it. The only "nice" thing about it was that it had a touchscreen and a stylus.

Kiyasuriin, 03 Jun 2018Exactly. Nothing will ever defeat Android!well consider only iphone who use ios so yeah, while android has so many oem and manufacture from flagship to cheap knockoff android

Nokia sold 10.5million Lumias in a quarter. That was HUGE. Nokia was also the one which bring all developers to make a WP app. Yet, MS seemed to f*ked it up.
                                920,930,950,1020 were good devices.

                                Shame on you, MS.
                                Just go to hell.

Lumia failed because they were little in market share and would act like the biggies when it comes to product pricing and lineup. Haven’t they learnt anything from the clever Chinese companies who start cheap and increase price as the popularity and acceptance grows. If those startup’s are successful today then Microsoft sure could’ve been. They just stuck to conventional strategies instead of thinking different to make the phones sell. Ordinary people don’t care much about the OS as long it’s a smartphone, so they could’ve given premium products at lesser price, what Xiaomi did and it was a giant success in short time. They can sell 200$ Xboxes but would sell a 950 XL for 600$. Who gonna buy that given WP is so low in popularity ?

Why r u digging the grave of wp and removing its carcass....gsmarena?? We know the story and we dont want to go thru it again
