Counterclockwise: selfie photography with cameras that rotate and slide

17 June 2018
The clash between the selfie cam and thin bezels birthed the notch. The vivo NEX S has one solution, but history has a few more suggestions.

Where is Samsung SGH-X600? https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_x600-511.php

Nzi97, 17 Jun 2018Kinda agree, nowdays the only proper way of differentiate p... moreNokia use to have cool smart looking notification lights on sides or front. Looked cool and had character. Little things that make some visual personality.

Anonymous, 17 Jun 2018You are so right I agree too. Be great to see experiments with backs instead of all glass. One reason I am not updating yet as I avoid all glass back like the plague. Grease pits. Google are trying a Matt glass in part this year but spoiled by a rather deep notch. Be great to see metal backs, leather feel or textured. Nokia use to have colourful notification lights on sides of phone. Little things that add character and personality. Individualism

hahaha LOL Doogee Mix 4 is a Xiaomi Mix copying series
actually Doogee are copycat makers so gsm didnt bother add update or remove them (like Ulefone and blackview)
it is more bezeLESS then VIVO NEX
they fixed the chin problem if it had pop up selfe it will definitely beat VIVO NEX

Celoxocis, 17 Jun 2018imagine this. if the humankind never had invented the selfi... moreWrong. If we never "invented" selfies, we still would like to use video calls. Therefore front camera would still be a thing. And who knows, maybe those cameras would still be of VGA resolution, because you barely ever need the detail in a video call.

The Mix4 seems like a clever solution. Especially if you combined it with sliding in the other directing like the BlackBerry Priv for a keyboard.

I miss Oppo's innovations before cause they were the special ones that made the whole world shook the FFC department.

NEC from 3, was my first phone with turntable camera.

Goddamn i really miss the old Oppo with 'unique' and beautiful designs. Today's Oppo just use ugly generic design ughh T_T

nokia had so many cool phones. The 3250 could rotate its belly!!
With the 3200 you could use your own background behind the clear plastic.
6600 had cool buttons on the sides.
6610 felt heavy and cool metal when held giving it a luxury feeling.
N70, N80, N73 was big and had a large screen and looked expensive.
N90 and N93 gained it coolness from its tv commercials.
E62 and E61i had you looking successful in the office.
N95 was the last cool Nokia phone before smartphones became a thing

I remember my first selfie phone from back in 2004, the NEC e313 with its rotating camera and one of the first phones capable of video calling in Australia, it was going to be the future of communication, that was till you got your bill for the data useage back then.

You've totally skipped a number of early Samsung phones, especially the X600 (flash and camera rotate together).

Pabliell, 17 Jun 2018People tend to say "bezelless is boring". Yes, it kinda is.... moreThose day when manufacturers experimenting were nice. However, the leather thing i think failed because it absorb sweats and emits foul smells. And these days a lot of manufacturer actually experiment with faux glass rear panel. They made the rear panel with plastic but look as glossy as glass and reflective pattern too. Some glass panel instead made to look like metalic. Very smart I say.

Ohhhh that Moto RAZR and Nokia N90 brings back memories. Miss those days. So wish they bring back.

Usually technology last longer with less amount of moving parts, but thats not true if its made in such quality that it lasts. That is however hard if you want to produce cheap and in millions. Would be something else if it was every-year thing, but its just not common, so no next gen to get it better. Example for this year of moving cameras - transparent screens are coming so do not hope for it to be back.
Same with aperture changing in S9+, though unique and definitely useful, its cheaper to made than alternative that exist - to add one more camera. Though with new tech it will last longer than your phone in your hands, it will not last longer than dual cam instead. Not everyone use phone or tablet 3 years, so device with non moving hw will be more reliable and worth more after few years.
Example of generations of hw component with moving parts, brought to perfection and to last - vibration hw -.
