19 June 2018
The motorized slider hides away the dual rear camera, the selfie camera and the 3D facial scanning tech.

Anonymous, 19 Jun 2018Because the market majority demands big phone. Too bad b... moreNot just a market trend... It's also a case of phone makers not properly listening to "all" customers nor willing to take chances.

Same goes for consumers; many people adore small phones, but when it comes to buying, they will go for bigger ones "just in case" they regret it later on. This is made worse by not having any real choices:

A- Going for iPhone SE is a nerve-wrecking decision being that small.
B- Going for Xperia Compact is an expensive proposition that requires commitment.

We need compact 5" ~ 5.2" 18:9 mid-range phones. Something powered by SD6xx, SD7xx, or the newer Helio P series.

BTW, whatever happened to that elusive Sharp Aquos R Compact?

I like this design more than the Vivo one. Looks "cooler" per say.

Both Vivo & Oppo deserve praise for their ideas though. Much better than simply copying Apple's hideous notch.

Joe Alligator, 19 Jun 2018How do you know? do you have one? Give new tech a chance mo... moreExactly!! The phone is beautiful, and i liked the aproach they did with the câmaras. I prefere this instead of the Vivo Nex.

Can't argue against smaller optics, but owning the Essential phone with tiny camera lenses, I see no reason why the camera can't be small and yet still good. (bad camera pics on the Essential were initially caused by bad software, later on it become very good)
Of course, I am not saying that it will compete against bigger ones, but for a slice of users, top-notch camera performance might take a second seat behind form factor, compactness, modularity, and/or rigidity. I know I am one of those people.

That been said... I wish this was a 5.8"~6" phone :(
            Maybe they'll make a smaller one with SD710 :)??

Anonymous, 19 Jun 2018They should have kept the back camera visible at all times.... moreActually, the camera will be protected, just the same as a regular point and shoot with a lens cap or extending zoom. I like it.

Well, no one spying on this phone camera
It will be hilarious if someone or some app try to access the camera discreetly by "illegal" way, then the slide just pop up

Joe Alligator, 19 Jun 2018How do you know? do you have one? Give new tech a chance mo... moreAgreed

46xy, 19 Jun 2018Why no Fingerprint scanner ??? There's a lot of place at back...I don't know if it's mentioned but I believe (no source though) that it goes for a UDFPS

They should have kept the back camera visible at all times. Now have to use the pop up mechanism every time you want to take a picture even with the back camera...

Reminds me of old sony Ericsson phones Cybershot series.. C series.... But this is good!

For those worry about the sliding thing incase it wears out or broken dont worry. You probably missed this while reading but the article clearly said, "The mechanism is motorized and can pop up in half a second". You will not manually slide it with your hand however you like so it will not get broken so easily. The same way how vivo nex camera is also motorized.

i see lot of dust on the popup system, secondly how much reliable is the popup mechanism ,cause if it fails to popup the phone will remain locked, third hope the 3d facial recognition doesn't get fooled

Awesome phone but if only it had not so iOS-y ColorOS

By virtue of this new technology, unlocking is slower and camera modules need to be even thinner than they are now (smaller optics, smaller sensors, more noise). Not impressed.

Admire the innovation, but the slide mechanism will overworked to death if it's used to unlock, tack calls, take front and back pictures. At least with the Vivo Nex, use is limited to selfies. Concern for mechanical failure is greater for this device unfortunately. Love the forward thinking tho.
