Sunday Debate - Are sliders cool or just a hassle?

01 July 2018
We argue about the innovative sliders on the vivo NEX S and Oppo Find X - are they worth it?

Sort by:

Sliders aren't cool, they are a must have versus pidar special security out there who can hijack your phone easy.

I agree with Ivan. Even sliding mechanism gives wows to NEX S or OPPO X after first impression wanes down you realise it is not the way for the future. It makes phones bulky and heavy, plus not very durable. Phones are moving to one peace slick design without notches to 100 screen to body ratio, but it will be achieve without sliding mechanisms. All sensors later will be incorporated underdisplay giving you 100 percent screen

I don't need you to believe, it might be hard to, but silicone cases do make a difference.

Here's another story that might entertain you: first smartphone was HD2, had a screen protector and rubber case, fell from my hand on the stairs, flipped down 4-5 steps and still functioned.

All of this happened as i watched it in slowww motion. I went to get it, took it of the ground, a few scratches and partly broken screen protector. Works as if nothing happened.

Phones fall all the time with most people. Most high-ends are well-made, but shit happens :)

There's not a scratch on it. They're not as fragile as you think they are. I've dropped it plenty of times. Yes, if you'd drop it on hard tarmac you're most likely screwed.
I just don't get why some people buys a nice phone just to put an ugly bumper and image wrecking screen protectors on them "just to make it a better buy for the next owner". If you're old enough to remember the good old 80's, people did the same with their cars. Put huge fugly black stickers on their cars to make it a prettier buy for the next owner. I definitely wouldn't do it to a phone like the Find X, especially now when it's a pretty unique phone.

As dozens of others have said, uses more power, takes up more space, suffers worse reliability, complicates sealing, increases cost. My wallet will stay shut.

All of the people I know who went "coverless" with their sony Zs, Samsung Ss and notes have a tree pattern growing on the back of the phone :/
BTW, I buy a phone to use it, not brag about it.

TooCold, 02 Jul 2018Every non IP-trendy rated phones have always worked in rain... moreWell, I had more luck with keyboard phones too. A Nokia diving in toilet, a Philips under the rain got lucky. Timely disassembly and a few days in rice brought them back to life. Another Nokia back in 2003 and a Xiaomi Mi 5s in 2017 didn't take rains so well, unfortunately.
There were numerous times a non-waterproof phone would fail me, and I'm not talking about that selfie in the waves (though the splashes looked cool), I'm talking about mundane stuff like getting caught in a tropic storm or just trying to talk when it's raining. Of course I've seen people put their phones in plastic bags but I prefer my phones being ready for real life straight out of the box.

As a customer, we don't have to lose our sleep on the difficulties the companies face in terms of the complexity. The companies are taking our money for all the hassle they are going through. The companies are providing these solutions is the proof that they themselves don't consider them as a hassle.
What we have to consider is what we are getting along with the sliders. A full-screen display without the notch. For me, that's the bigger gain than the notch solution which I still don't know why they went in that favour.
These sliders are anyway aren't going to last for long because Apple is working on the full-screen display without the notch, without the sliders so we just need to settle down and wait for the next innovation which will stick rather than these stop-gap solutions.

They won't be as cool when the slidder mechanism will (unavoidably) break

Brandstifter, 02 Jul 2018Well, you see, the point of waterproofing is not being able... moreEvery non IP-trendy rated phones have always worked in rain and snow and I had NONE malfunction because of it. I even had coke/water spillage on keyboard phones and none of them stopped working although coke has made keys stickier so they needed cleanup.

When people have dropped the phones in toilet or pool first rule was not to turn it on until it's dry and there is a great chance it would work again.

I hope sliders and notches are just temporary gimmicks. When they start making phones with flexible screens, there will be no need to maximize screen space the way it's done now.

If the sliders are made tough, there is no problem.
Even will protect the lenses of the cameras from scratching.
Half a second time to open is not a problem.
                                        My opinion. Cheers!
