They don't care about how these companies do business as long as they come out making a profit. That's a fact - Just ask any Romanian who has an import-export business with China. Although, your idea of boycotting China is admirable to save Romanian economy it is not sustainable.

2200 people unemployed but Nokia promises to help those people find new jobs. IN CHINA where the labour is even cheaper than Romania.

As Nokia ex-employee from Romanian factory I can say that top level mangers are using now Samsung phones because Nokia phones are too crapy to feet theirs needs: e-mail sync, callendar meetings sync and so on.

Nokia went down seriously in the last 5 years and this is only one repercusion of what they deserve. Unfortunately , Romania is led by some crappy politicians and the economy sucks , so closing this factory will practically damage some simple people who have no guilt. Sad.

Ah, I can't wait for the Tizen Takeover to occur. :) Nokia lost me as a cell phone company when they shifted to WP7. Now, I'm Android and Tizen all the Way! Mainly Tizen. Tizen and Android! The future of the Smartphone OS.

Directly...this will not affect me...at first, but it will have an effect on the romanian economy...so on and so forth.
So..1 objective point and 1 subjective argument..
First of all, regardless of wether or not smart or non-smart phones were produced at jucu, it is a well known fact that product quazlity is not the same...speaking Europe made vs Asian made. No offence, but event smartphones made in asia are well below any european quality standard and i say that knowing these facts very well (also from my experience with nokia phones as well)
secondly, the subjective argument...and i believe that it is a very strong argument considering that consumer bahaviour is directly affected by subjective "standards"..Well, i was, until yesterday, an avid Nokia brand product buyer and a huge fan. i actually got an E6 about 3 days ago. BUT, i am giving up on nokia and will not buy another nokia phone ever.
quality has gone down the drain these last 2 years...this is the awfull part!!!!!!!!
...and, it is also a protest against relocating factories from Europe!
P.S. economic "wtf?" : if the economic data has determined nokia to do this, with respect to the 2008-2011 economic crisis...How come salaries at jucu are now actually lower than those in 2008??
So, if cheap labour force IS the big deal, WHY move a factory from a place where u can actually pay less every year for the same job?
MY PROPOSAL IS...IF THEY WILL MAKE PHONES IN ASIA, THEY SHOULD SELL THEM IN ASIA, SO THEY GET A TESTE OF THEIR OWN "WORK". DON'T SEND THEM TO EUROPE, WE DON'T WANT LOW QUALITY PRODUCTS, NO MATTER THE BRAND!

I am romanian, no so very sad because we lost such a investment (yeah nokia was the second company after dacia-renault in exporting ), i am sad because i am really an nokia fan ..In the future i will try to evoid buying nokia phone :(

I read this post and also some of the trolling and fights going on in the comment section. Like all sane people I have some points to make too. Nokia is currently in dire straits, and so is its commitment to Symbian. It is the responsibility of every organization to ensure it upholds its shareholder value - what Nokia is doing - from a business perspective - may be the right decision. But layoffs and the meager salaries they have paid to the Romanian workers is despicable. I am not sure how much of an advance notice thy have given their workforce - but if Nokia does not stand on its commitment of helping its factory workers get jobs, all Romania should stand up for its right. I feel deeply for our Romanian brethren being affected by this move and hope God helps you all.
On the front of Mobile OS - as a consumer - I am very happy for all the options available in the market. Currently Nokia is in a process of dying, and if that happens Symbian may as well go the PalmOs way. But still Nokia has not crossed the point-of-no-return and may as well make a comeback. For the sake of all its employees - I do hope it makes a comeback. Android has been going strong not only because it is backed by Google and the Open Source community but also because it is evolving with every version. Though too many fragments can definitely kill it. If Android undergoes a convergent evolution (read Ice-cream Sandwich) successfully, we will see more of these devices. Plus Android is fun to use! WM 7 was MS' big ticket item but flopped on so many counts. Unless MS thinks to re-write WM from scratch, it doesn't stand much chance. (I have used MS from the days of windows mobile 5.0 and am aware that the software has continuously bloated with subsequent revisions, but never 'evolved'). Bada may or may not survive - it looks nothing more than an Android-inspired copy, plus there are not too many developers on the BADA platform. Did I miss anything else out?
If Nokia needs to remain competetive and develop value for all stakeholders - employees included - it will need to reinvent itself. The tie-up with MS may or may not work, but Nokia has definitely lagged behind in listening to the voice of it's customers.
To all my Romanian friends - I do hope something better happens for you - and soon.
