A newly published patent points to LG possibly manufacturing a foldable smartphone with a foldable display.

    The best phone from LG was the Flex2..LG should look at reworking that phone..and making it available in Australia..

      Almost all the time, a device dedicated to 1 thing will be better than a one-thing-does-it-all.

      Sony RX100 cameras (just to give and example) are miles ahead of smartphones.

      Dedicated music players are better than smartphones for audiophiles. Why do you think they're so expensive and still sell to their demographic. Niche market, but a market none the less.

      And don't get me started on portable gaming lol. You're obviously right. Oh wait, no you're not. Not only are the controls far less intuitive, the games released on smartphones are barely comparable to the blockbuster hits on portable devices (like the Nintendo Switch).

      But hey, look at you, commenting anonymously, ignoring the part about flip phones because that's exactly what they are how the patents are now, and moving goalposts for the dedicated devices.

All of those are better in their respective fields than your smartphone. It's just that a smartphone is more convenient and you take convenience over the added functionnality.

          And if you need to open up your phone before you can use it, which you have to do if you fold the display inwards, it's basically a flip phone.

And, no, two separate devices are not necessarily better than one that does it all. That's why most people don't carry a cell phone, a pager, a personal organiser, an MP3 player, a camera, a gaming handheld, a notebook, and a dozen other things on a daily basis.

Maybe I'm just not willing to get excited for a form factor that seems so premature at the moment. It's like saying "there's a patent for a holographic watch-phone with 3D multitouch and integrated brainwave control..." I'm not getting out my wallet for foldable phones yet until somebody shows us a prototype. Samsung is closest, but it'll be like watching a marathon, getting a real and working, slim, affordable device. Seeing is believing. Okay maybe 2023? Haha.

Being connected all the time is a good thing (think about emergencies as an example). Having a foldable display and thus even more screen estate draining the same old battery even faster has no real benefits to just carrying a tablet for the few things you need a tablet for over a phone. Ofcourse that's how I feel about this, you're free to think otherwise.

                  As with everything, a separate tablet and phone will always be the better option than a 2-in-1 imo. (The only exception being the Microsoft Surface Book) I don't see this as a massive innovation compared to going from a flip phone or slider phone to a touchscreen, at least not in the near future. But who knows, maybe they'll surprise me and the execution won't be as half-assed as it looks right now.

                  I feel like they have their priorities wrong, as new battery technologies would be more welcome than a foldable screen.

Firstly, they would need glass that doesn't break after flexing. Second, if the concept phone was closed, only the front would be prone to breaking. Lastly, there would be a metal hinge, meaning it should be sturdy. I mean, this is a concept, so I guess we gotta wait and see until Samsung releases it

Samsung has been delaying their X phone for years. I hope some company will work out the kinks and deliver a product by 2019. I really doubt we'll have anything usable in that timeframe. Maybe an expensive and breakable toy. So... that's why I don't think people are lining up to be "early adopters" of this highly experimental tech just yet.

Your life before the smartphone I presume was fine, why did you buy a smartphone? was it on youre radar? Foldable phones are the next revolution and some people dont see that.. Even the first phone ever was labelled a gimmick and "of no practical use"
