Barricade, 05 Jul 2018I personally don't get the hype for foldable displays. You should get the hype, its the next revolution in mobile phones, similiar to the advent of the touchscreen. So you cant get very very hyped.
There were doubts when they abandoned physical keys. There were doubts when the screen to body ratio increased, people thought the screen would break more easily. You see foldable displays are the next logical step, and you will love it.

Anonymous, 05 Jul 2018A drop impact will give it break into 2 or 3 pieces screen.ok a couple of things. 1, why would a flexible screen be prone to cracking? and 2, the phone you own now are 10 times more likely to crack when dropped

I'm looking forward to foldable phones, but I'd prefer something like the Axon M but with a foldable display, rather than a clamshell design like this one. It doesn't look like the screen will be particularly large when folded out.

A desperate attempt by stupid useless "designers" to something, whether it's wanted or needed by us, the buyers, doesn't matter to them, engineers working on display tech because apparently we need/want bigger and bigger displays, sorry boys, but your wrong again, sweet spot for size is about 170-200 mm, anything bigger becomes a bit of a pain in the real world, look at tablets, ask yourself why, when there is a choice of sizes, do so many makers and buyers pick 7 inch, 170mm for tablets ?
If its end use is to carried around for most of its life, often in pockets etc, 170mm works fine, folded in half makes that 85mm,which even kids sized hands can handle, trouble is, folk don't really like clamshells, that's why as soon as bigger displays became possible with kit like SE p series, clamshells died, some folk can live with them, but for most folk it's a step backwards, concentrate on pull out displays, either flexible or 2 part slider.
I really do wonder if these makers actually do use focus groups or user surveys or just try the old method of throwing mud at a wall !!!
Ask folk what they actually want and it's a good multi-media device, about 170mm,huge battery life, decent tough hd+ display, good audio, preferably front facing stereo speakers, reliable, fast fingerprint readers and 3.5mm jacks, silly camera systems, huge battery life, stock or almost stock OS's, and regular long term security and OS updates, and huge battery life..
Such a device is not right for some folk, but for the large majority, that's what they like using, but make the display much bigger than 185mm and it gets awkward to use in the real world...

First fix your driver software and camera software, before coming with things like foldable phones....

Hmm I don't see the issue in wanting a foldable device.. I mean how are you gonna fit a screen protector on them... or put some type of screen protector.. and if it's plastic and not glass.. I can't see it being as durable as glass.. well unless dropped.. it might survive better.. assuming it's not toughened plastic as to allow it to bend.. also does light pass as clearly through plastic as glass...
Can't see the point in foldable phone's.. if your after a tablet.. then sure.. makes it's Easyer to carry.. but what you gonna do unfold a tablet in public and hold it up to your ear.. so it just gives company's to items to sell.. I could be wrong.. but I can't see it catching on.. also life expectancy on the folding brackets.. and if the bracket is exposed what about dirt and grim getting inbetween it.. more moving parts.. about like the vivo latest.. creates more issues..

gollygeewillikers, 05 Jul 2018Realistically, foldable displays are not on the radar for m... moreI think it has matured a bit. This foldable idea wasnt born yesterday. All the hardware that will come with foldable smartphone is pretty well developed too like flexible display, battery, glass, hinge design. LG been doing flexible display for their tv quite a while too; like LG Wallpaper tv. LG also make rollable oled tv.
Your 2028 goal is too far buddy. Tech and ideas change too much within 10 years. Look at 2008 again. Is there any tech that required 10 years of wait from 2008? We achieved tablet, smartwatch, VR headset & AR glasses design in just 5 years from 2008. Since that we also achieved in-display fingerprint sensor, iris scanner, face unlock, bezel less screen, dual/triple camera. Still science fiction? Welcome to 2018.

Realistically, foldable displays are not on the radar for most smartphone and tablet users, in my humble opinion. The technology itself is not even mature enough for a reliable prototype. Manufacturers are simply trying to bridge smartphone portability with tablet-size media consumption, and that's fine and good, but we're years away from that goal. It's the kind of research and development that I hope will pay off for consumers in the near term, but logically I know it will take another decade for any real usable device. It will be cool in 2028 for sure. Until then, these devices will be cumbersome, yet interesting, science fiction props.

Foldable clam shell designs like these don't make sense. Exactly what purpose does it serve? Foldable tablets or phone-tablet convertibles make more sense. Here's what I have in mind: a 3:2 aspect ratio tablet that can be folded to 1/3 its size along its length in 'Z' shaped (pamphlet style) tri-fold configuration like this one:
https://pt.depositphotos.com/30959321/stock-illustration-blank-trifold-paper-z-folded.html This way, the foldable tablet or phone-tablet convertible can be used just like an ordinary 2:1 (18:9) aspect ratio phone with the leftmost 1/3 of the screen displaying like a regular 2:1 (18:9)phone when folded and transform into a 3:2 tablet when unfolded. Until this sort of design comes to fruition, I see no reason to buy a 'foldable phone' that folds out like the clamshell dumb phones of the past.

Idk, either 2 screens with it being closed like a book or 3 screens with one on front and two in the "pages" of the book
