Sounds like, author do not take into account fact that on screen fingerprint sensors are much less secure then standard capacitive ones (whatever front or rear mounted) .
IMHO until that problem is resolved its not worth pursuing technology which will make it easier for third parties to access device which kind of holds your entire digital life.

UDFS is definitely the future and just matter of time when basically every flagship will have one with as convenient as reliable as capacitive one. Moving later towards midrangers.

        what's that debate all about?!
question should be front mounted or in display?
where is comparison between front and back?!
        stupid question indeed!

In-screen fs are going to be like facial scanning (i.e Apple) or HUD displays in cars. Nice gimmick when it works. When it doesn't, it is useless and when it breaks, it is EXPENSIVE to fix for little return.

Leave the separate FS scanners where they are. Front, back, side, no matter, just leave them on there. Leave the gimmicks in the lab for the geeks to drool over.

Imperator Neubaticus, 09 Jul 2018If you can't see that an under display fps is the marriage ... moreActually the inside display fs has a very long way to go before it will be as fast and reliable as fs inside buttons. Also the wake up by touching it function will never be there.

But it's not even about fs alone. It's about much more than that. It's about the ability to hold the device comfortable without worry you accidentally touch something, the possibility to wake up the device with a single touch even when on the table, the possibility to map a special function to that button so that you can quickly launch you favorite app with a simple double, the possibility to quickly get out of a full screen app without needing to swipe first and so on.

Some of these can be compensated by software but most of them can't.
I'm not saying all screen phones should not exist.
All I'm saying is OEMs should provide an option for people who like the convenience of having buttons as well.

Most Huawei and Asus I've put my hands on had it conveniently placed so I don't have to change my grip. My index just rested there.

And for the sake of argument, a separate FPS adds more functionality than useless extra buttons (looking at you, bixby!).

I don't mind a front or back placed fingerprint sensor, but under the display is just not gonna cut it for me. I like devices that can be fixed fast and cheap.

H-1, 09 Jul 2018Chill dude! It's not cool to keep making fun of people.. ... moreIt doesn't really add more functionality as the position of 99% of all rear mounted fingerprint sensors are so awkward you're rarely near them with a finger. Again, if those gestures are something you need then you can just as well use the same screen your doing everything else on. Plus side, you won't have to switch the grip to use the gestures and you have plenty of edges and a huge surface in the middle to cram full of as many gestures you like.
Having an under-screen FPS has absolutely zero to do with keeping a power button. I mean, seriously, what?
The scenario I can think of when I want to use the phone without holding it means it's laying on a table or sitting in a dock. You will definitely not use the fingerprint sensor for anything in that case. :)

The point is, keeping a fingerprint sensor on the rear as an argument FOR gestures is almost like insisting a separate touch pad is better for navigating a phone. It's maybe a neat feature but it's really not an improvement to what you can do with a touch screen.

Under the glass fingerprint scanners are prone to fail. They fail with smudges on the glass, they fail depending of the ambient light, they fail if your fingers are cold. The only under the glass scanners with good accuracy (and even then, worse than capacitive scanners) I've seen were the cumbersome ones, way chunkier than anything that could be used as a phone.

Do not over complicate the screen just make it stronger and less prone to scratches, leave the scanner on the back where its a piece of cake to touch. plus i bite the skin of my thumbs so my fingerprint changes alot and its a nightmare using an index finger on the front as you have to change your hand orientation. Leave it at the back (in a better position than my S8 of course)

Zenodroid, 09 Jul 2018How's the side fps when using tpu cover? Since the covers (TPU, plastic or leather) made for the phone model have the openings required to touch the fingerprint scanner, that's not a problem at all. I only see that sometimes unlocking with your thumb may get you some missed attempts on the side-mounted scanner when using a cover, but that doesn't happen using other fingers (you can have 5 different registered fingers to unlock, so it's fine).

Okay, I'll break it down for you:
Think of the FPS as an extra button. It adds more functionality.

I have a gesture for increasing and lowering the volume, but does that mean I stopped using the hardware volume keys?

Also, would you like a phone without any button? Like you can just press hard on the screen and that acts like a power button and there's a gesture for everything?

You'll keep using the screen, but the split FPS offers things you can do without touching it in certain occasions.

My cover is also silicone, I didn't like how it covered the power button so I just carved a hole for it using a precision knife :)

I am 100% supportive of rear FPS (LG V20 user). The sensor acts as a power button and I can unlock the phone as soon as I pick it up (my index finger naturally rests about 2/3 of the height of the phone). Its fast, works 9/10 times and I don't touch the camera lens as it is on a raised bump.

For the naysayers of having to pick up the phone to unlock, I simply double tap the screen which brings up the pin request. I am not sure if all phones have this function, but this has served me well.

Phones should be made in such a way so that there is no need of adding an external case. What kind of argument is "with case you get used to where the scanner is". Yeah, I got used on my phone too only when I bough a case. Which means that phones have bad UX without external accesoires and that makes phones' price from end-user point of view even higher. In phones from 2-3 years ago the fingerprint scanner was on the front as a physical button. That was perfect. New phones lack this UX level whether it is on the back or inside the screen on the front.

People, get your sh_t togetgher !!! All these technologies like force touch, finger print sensor, vibrating glass speaker, will make the dislpay to cost over 400 euro in case you broke it accidentally. It may reach to cost in service like the phone brand new. Most of users will be forced to throw at trash bin their phones only for a easy- cracked display. Who need these complications, these costs ??? Let the bloody fingerprint sensor on the back, let the display to be cheap in case of crack. All these tecnologies will be payed by us.
