Apple and it's iPhone are a completely different creature and are going after a different audience than Samsung with their GSII. It's Motorola, HTC, & other manufacturers that are competing with Samsung. Apple only competes with itself.
And you're right...something did cause the redesigned iPhone to be held back. Apple does have a teardrop, thin iPhone prototype but decided not to release it because the battery life and heat issues proved unsatisfactory. Apple refuses to release a phone that will have worse battery performance than the previous generation. It's just wrong to think that they spent 16 months on nothing but the 4S.

I just think the iPhone 4S IS the iPhone 5. Maybe they just can't keep up with the fast improvement of Android (especially Samsung with the Galaxy S II and then the S III expected to be out maybe Feb 2012), it would be a shame to have just minor improvements so they may have decided to just name it iPhone "4S". Anyway it is just my speculation. My opinion is based on popular perception that Android in general is fast improving as compared to the iOS.
They ALREADY postponed the iPhone5 w/c was expected last summer. They made people wait until October only to show up with a 4S? Something is not right. In a few months there will be better Android phones than the SGSII -which right now is the king of Smartphones- so I don't know how the iPhone series can keep up with this fast paced competition.

Used to be an Apple fan.. Tried Samsung Galaxy S2 and now I couldn't care less about iPhone 4s. Im working for At&t, been dealing with people dying to get iPhone 4s who even wrnt as far as lying about their upgrade eligibility just to get one.. And it sucks.

there is only one apple iphone. yet every other phone manufacturer is throwing everything at them. it's like pc v mac all over. more companies producing / competing equals more choice, cheaper price and quicker development. but apple designs it's products for the end user experience and doesn't just throw the best components together.
i've tried to love the sgs2 but it doesn't do it for me.
however why is there all the bitching on all the websites.
it's personal choice and lets just say that all modern phones are good.

Will get two units as soon as it lands on my carrier in my country. iOS, on hardware that is superpowerful. iCloud, AirPlay for gaming and video, Siri, Dual Core A5, awesome camera, I can't wait to get my hands on it.
