Anonymous, 04 Aug 2018Of course they are flexible. They are oled.
And what makes... more1. Not all OLEDs are flexible. There are OLED displays without a flexible substrate.
2. What makes them cheaper to produce is the manufacturing process, which they explain as printing the OLEDs to the substrate instead of the usual evaporation technique. Their printing method is way more efficient.
The following comes directly from J-OLED's site [ j-oled.com/english ]. You'll find the important bits in the last paragraph.
-
An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) has superior features such as high color reproduction and high contrast ratio.
The conventional EL deposition technique is evaporation, and there are two kinds of technologies applied for the AM-OLED display production, however, there are some issues.
In the case of “Side-by-side” technology, three different light emitting layers are deposited side-by-side through a Mask.
The use of side-by-side discrete R, G, B emitters has the advantages of high power efficiency and wide color gamut, however, it requires large vacuum chambers for depositing three colors and three times of precise Mask alignment.
In addition, its extremely low material efficiency and the difficulty in depositing uniform thin films are the issues for production.
In the case of “White OLED” technology, only a white colored emitter is deposited without precise Mask alignment, and color is produced by color filter. This method has advantages of high productivity, however, its color reproductivity and low light utilization due to color filtering are the issues.
We have developed an RGB printing technology for the emitting layers. This technology realizes extremely high material efficiency, high light utilization, and uniform emitter patterning.
Moreover, low cost manufacturing is realized by the scalable, high productivity printing system. RGB emitters are all printed for the different panel sizes and resolutions by a single printing system, which enables printing under the atmospheric pressure without a vacuum chamber. It realizes to reduce the production lead time.

Aren't they already in market by the name of Japan Display (a joint venture with Sony)? What did I miss?

Barricade, 03 Aug 2018JOLED panels are flexible and they'll have a different manu... moreOf course they are flexible. They are oled.
And what makes them more cost efficient is a difference of rare and important materials.
However the cost of developing and striving these years to make better and more efficient diodes that last longer. Especially blue ones...and almost failing to keep support and bring full scale manufacturing or a finished product for sale means it wont be chap...not yet.
However longer lasting ones that can opperate at half the power draw for the same brightness means they will be bery amazing displays

Dientesdesierra, 03 Aug 2018Lol no, amoled pentile have Sawtooth and obsolete technolo... moreDo you know Samsung switch to pentile after finding out oled degrade over years. The pentile arrangement allows blue oled to degrade slower. Which is the main culprit of screen burn in issue. Samsung has been doing this for many years. They know what they doing. Other oled makers simply just want to achieve beautiful accurate colors without thinking of such issues.

Joled has been shipping oled since last year. Asus is client, oled for medical monitors.
I hope someone ( no matter LG, Sharp or JDI) provides RGB or WRGB oled.
Pentile is a bad technology used just to cut costs. That is why 1080p oled is awful.
JOLED uses inkjet print, better method than evaporation ( popular in Korea) also cheaper.

Don Federico Rivero, 03 Aug 2018sony and panasonic used LG oled panelsYeah, true but they're using it while they make theirs, which they collaborated on a company that makes OLED and there starting to mass production right now for the monitors and other panels then later for the TVs. The company is called JOLED.

Walter C. Dornez, 03 Aug 2018What's the difference between all those OLED types?JOLED panels are flexible and they'll have a different manufacturing process, which makes the panels a lot cheaper to make (and thus a bit cheaper to purchase). It also is an RGB panel instead of a pentile one, which should make for better colours.
That being said, I don't know if JOLED will get into the smartphone market any time soon, I think they're focussing on middle-sized panels first.
