Nick Tagataka, 11 Sep 2018Yeah, cheated on Kirin 970. And the reason why they did it ... moreIn any case, it is obviously bad quality or bad constructed chipset, and I would not know if they did or did not do shady stuff before. Other companies could overclock their chipsets aswell to get higher scores...

Realistic1, 11 Sep 2018Not really... Huawei has been busted cheating... enough said...Yeah, cheated on Kirin 970. And the reason why they did it is because of poor GPU efficiency of 960. After finding out how badly 960 performs in terms of power consumption, they decided to clock down Kirin 970 on P20 series except when benchmarking to prevent the overheating in day-to-day usage. In their older SoC including Kirin 950 or 935, they didn't even need to do this kind of shady stuffs because the power usage of GPU was extremely low.

I'd test Huawei's claims twice, just in case...

rubberish, 17 Aug 2018haha you're right, Kirin chipset always one generation behi... moreSince late 2015, Kirin chipsets have been always AHEAD of Snapdragon counterparts except for Kirin 970. Kirin 950 completely destroyed Snapdragon 810 which had been released in the same year and Mate 8 was still faster than most Snapdragon 820-equipped devices thanks to far superior CPU performance. Kirin 960 was faster than Snapdragon 821, and only Kirin 970 was behind Snapdragon 835 in terms of overall performance. Now this year Kirin 980 will destroy Snapdragon 845, and it's pretty obvious given its newer A76 cores and more power efficient 7nm process node... Qualcomm will be able to catch up with 855, but until then this one will reign supreme.

And here I read people saying 970s is not good for heavy usage
While my phone power with 950s and I'm heavy user and its running like new until this day.

The kirin 970 is not for this year, its for last year, this year is the kirin 980 the world's first 7nm commercially available. SD845 is still 10nm, talk about upgrade huh...

I'm curious what people use their phones for, when they say that Kirin 980 is slow and sucks.

The only answer ever is that you play games on the phone. Let that sink in. You're an adult who needs to buy a new phone every year so you can play games on it in the highest FPS.

For everyone else, it matters very little what chipset is in the phone, but obviously this Kirin 980 will be one of the most powerful chipset out there.

You can tell that by simply looking at ARM's official website.

From this article it looks like they are comparing the A76 to the A75 chip. So a 20 percent increase from the A75 not the K970 which was an A73 chipset.

20% is awful. Cpu wise should rival Exynos 9810, but considering only 20% upgrade it will be close to sd845. Gpu wise nothing special again, it is using two years old g72 not good enough to compete with sd 855 or next exynos chipset, as usual Kirin will be behind top dogs, nothing new
