ARM unveils roadmap: Cortex-A76 to tackle Intel, Deimos and Hercules cores incoming

16 August 2018
The A76 is expected to offer Core i5 7300U performance at 1/3 of the power. Deimos and Hercules will be even faster.

MagicMonkey, 17 Aug 2018The project performance numbers are for single-core perform... moreYes... but Intel managed to increase the total system performance by +100% whilst increasing power draw by only +50%. Or in an apples-to-apples comparison, the new 8th-gen Intel Core i5-U chips draw the same power as the 7th-gen Core i7-U chips whilst providing an extra +30% performance uplift.

So if ARM wants to make a proper comparison to Intel, about their chip that they plan on releasing nearly 2 years later, they would have to compare it to where they would think Intel's chips will be in 2 years. If Intel improves their 9th-gen chip to the 10th-gen chip like they did with the jump in 7th-gen to 8th-gen... then Intel hypothetically will be (much) ahead of ARM.

Not to mention the benchmark figures in ARM's slide are very questionable, I would say realistically they've (purposely) inflated their figures by +50% and (purposely) deflated Intel's figures by +50%. And the benchmark they've chosen isn't that great to begin with.

So its also crucial to remember that Intel's chipsets, although rated for 15W TDP, they're actually closer to 12W in-practice. And this includes the CPU, as well as a iGPU, RAM system, Southbridge and Northbridge....basically a fully functional PC. ARM's figures are probably MORE efficient that Intel's, but when you add in the battery used by the iGPU, RAM module, and the other essential components to get a functional PC you see that efficiency wither away.

I would realistically expect to see ARM get -40% less single-threaded performance in practical use, and a respectable -20% less total system performance. However, the Intel systems would be drawing ~13W of total power (excl. Touchscreen) whilst the ARM systems would be drawing ~9W of total power (excl. Touchscreen). And that's on Windows10 Apps written and optimised for ARM SoC's....anything that requires "Hardware Emulation" is still going to suffer tremendously, maybe (in the future) not as bad as losing to the Atom Z8750 but definitely bad enough to lose to the lowest tier Core i3-730y ("m").

Remember this is ARM trying to compete with Intel for the Windows10 Laptop category.
Based on what I know, if I were buying a new Ultrabook in 2 years, I would choose Intel over ARM again (which is bad from a competition pov, but as a consumer I want the best product for my money).

I7 7700 is al... moreEven if they are targetting i7-7700(HQ), they won't succeed without raising TDP so much (this beast has 45W TDP). But raising TDP so much is against their principle. So yeah, they won't make it. Not in the near future.

Anonymous, 16 Aug 2018Intel will still reign Supreme in true desktop class perfor... moreIt is a very good comment. Obviously Arm only intrested on surpassing low power cores like Intel u series.it is just not possible physical to expect 5W cores to perform better than mobile x86-64 core which takes between 15-40w not mentioning desktop over 70W, but to compare with old school cpu's is fun. My first desktop processor Celeron 1.7ghz 32 bit from 2002 era would have no chance against any arm cpu these days :) but if we talk about my current i7 3770k from 2012, arm approaching fast to catch up with it, and give it 3 more years and maybe it will deliver similar performance To it :)

Kiyasuriin, 17 Aug 2018There are those people who think I am one of "these people"... moreDUH! We're making use of the full potential of what a high-end flagship is meant to be. Other than picking up calls and messaging, we can use it for other stuff, such as heavy multitasking, social media, entertainment, high graphic games, and the camera, that's for sure

ARM cant beat intel any time soon ...

Intel are Just greedy and they dont offer us more cores in the low voltage CPU because they want more money.

But they have the technology to deliver even tripple the count of cores at the same watt. this technology is waiting in the drawer to be sold in 2020 ...

you dont know how companies like intel work ,. they give you older technology just to cash the money , but they can bring on what they have in tghe drawer if they feel threat to lose the market.

                          A revolution is definitely coming.

MagicMonkey, 17 Aug 2018The project performance numbers are for single-core perform... moreI thought it was also related to multi-core performance. But even the highest 845 device's single core performances is still behind the current generation. If Whiskey Lake U has further refinements and better heat control....watch out. ARM still has a ways to go to catch up.

I am a gamer, I don't play basic games like those you've mentioned, my style is more MOBA games, Osu! I am a composer, DJ (fan of DJing, not a profrssional) among other stuff, to preform these things on the best side I need the best chipset with the higher power output. I know I am a weird woman, but that's me.

NickTheDude, 17 Aug 2018all current desktop programs are running in x86 based arch... moreFirst, you mean all WINDOWS desktop programs. Even then, your claim is still false, as most of today's programs run atop an interpreter framework, such as .net, python, Java and others -- that means the programs themselves are not tied to x86.

On the other hand, once you consider Linux, Android and ChromeOS, things instantly turn. Today most of their programs already run on Raspberry Pis, which are really low cost ARM boards. Microsoft themselves have signaled multiple times the intention to develop for ARM (Windows RT, the Continuum and now the new partnership with Qualcomm), with Apple hinting that it's going in the same direction.

Anything can happen, but as far as intentions go, it does seem like ARM has the momentum.

all current desktop programs are running in x86 based architecture .we cannot emulate those programs to run in arm at same speed . it is good to see that arm is improving. but if there is no good programs for ARM then it would be bad :(
