Counterclockwise: Xiaomi shows $300 is all a flagship needs to cost

26 August 2018
The Mi 5 and Pocophone are proof enough. Even so, we think the Mi Mix is the most important phone that Xiaomi ever built.

Can't deny impressive company offering ambitious smartphones for third of a price of top dogs. Considering Smarthpone prices reaching 1000 dollar marks, next year my next phone could be one of the bad boys from One Plus, Xiaomi or OPPO.

Have the Mi5 and I love it. Beautiful phone with powerful internals for price for which you only get mediocre mid end phone from the big brands like Samsung or HTC. And people complain over MIUI, but I must say that I really like it. It's just nice and convenient to use. And don't get me started on software support. The amount of updates I've received on Mi5 alone is larger than on all other phones combined through last 10 years. I'm not even kidding. I'm certainly gonna be sticking with Xiaomi in the future.

Anonymous, 27 Aug 2018Xiaomi Mi8 already destroyed iPhone X which is slow like hell.iPhone 8 is still the fastest, but the Mi8 has certainly destroyed Samsung and its ilk.

          It's not waterproof.

I bought Mi4i but the touch screen sensor was broken and battery capacity massively dropped just after a year. Never have such problem with my older Sony midrange phones.

Don't expect great hardware reliability as well for that spec at that price. Buy it but don't expect it will last now than a year. You might get good quality ones but their quality testing will not as thorough as more expressive phones.

Low price but still not worth it considering poor update policy of that Chinese company.

Anonymous, 26 Aug 2018Plastic body. Poor quality secondary camera. Screen is not ... moreyou better search for words "plastic" and "poly carbonate" to understand the differences,
poor quality secondary camera? wth are you talking about? who the f cares about secondary camera, as long as it gives you excellent photos? i bet you haven't even check the samples on gsmarena review page, as per your statement people should threw away their pixel 2, because it has no secondary camera
name 1 phone that is below 450$ that uses sd845 and ufs2.1 storage type, who says flagships must come with amoled? sony xz2 has ips lcd and cost 700-800$
ofc its not a flawless phone but definitely a brilliant flagship

I remember this Pocophone F1 hype train with the OnePlus' One before. I hope Xiaomi will balance the pricing on the future.

                  They're winning the midrange market.

People asking "can it compete" really never had any xiaomi phone I believe. Yes it is smooth, yes they do upgrade regularly to newest UI (not newest Android, thats not needed), yes the camera is good, the sound is as well as others (cept front mounted ofc), signal strength great, build quality great. It also has same flaws as apple: bad security (greetings to nsa), bad working conditions (foxconn), robbing ressources, you find nothing better yet (only fairphone1,2 and that was not well received aswell)...still, buy it and go back to apple if you want but try it first.

The Poco F1 or Pocophone F1 goes against the Xiaomi founding principles. There is no denying that Xiaomi right from the beginning has been inspired by Apple. And this extended to its marketing strategy. Launch a few beautiful highest spec products, but at affordable prices.

Initially Xiaomi would launch just one or two products a year and would run riot in the markets. Mi1 or Mi2 case in point. And a lot of effort was spent on product design and UI design making these products unique.

Over the years the number of products Xiaomi launches in a year has multiplied exponentially leading to an erosion in brand identity and value. Today people just cant say if its products they see in a shop or see someone using it is a Redmi Note 5 or a Redmi 5. Same issue with A2 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. They all look the same.

Now if 2 brands were not enough (Xiaomi and Redmi) the company is launching a third brand. And one with a funny sounding name. Secondly this phone doesnt look great. Compare it with the sub 20k phones being launched by Vivo, Oppo or Huawei, this phone is just drab and boring. I might even say by 2018 standards it looks ugly. Where is the Xiaomi principle of launching products that are beautiful like Apple?

This phone doesnt work for me. I dont care too much for its specifications. I mean the only headline going for it seems to be '845 for below 20k'. Who cares? Even if a phone today has a slightly less powerful SOC, it would do most of the tasks well. And if they really wanted to impress hardcore gamers, I think they should have made the device more beautiful to look at. Ever seen gaming laptops or PCs? they never look boring.

Anonymous, 27 Aug 2018It's not even waterproof. Like a budget phone. Such a weird... moreSince when being waterproof is a fact to count a phone as flagship or not?

I find it embarrassing to buy xiaomi in Europe or in the US. This is a cheap product for low incoming countries. Not sure why you keep bringing it into discussion.

I think Meizu 16 is better buy for $395. Better display (Super AMOLED), slimmer bezel, better camera, better design, fingerprint under display. Yes it has smaller battery size due to much slimmer body, but it will be full charged faster because of its smaller battery capacity.

They sells Flsgship phone with flagships specs for 300 and Samsung Sony or Apple drain blood from its customers for asking 1000 plus for litterary same speedy phones.
And i really dont believe that any extra features theses phones have cost 700.

Anonymous, 26 Aug 2018Plastic body. Poor quality secondary camera. Screen is not ... moreSounds like the OnePlus One.

So how good do those dual speakers sound?

I love my Xiaomi Mi 3. Got it for $250 back in July 2014. Still works really well even for today. Only issues is only 16 GB storage, no microSD slot, and camera got very dated very quickly and was already poor in low light.

That was the only flagship I got for under $300 during the last 14 years I became a phone aficionado. The Poco F1 is probably their cheapest since. Essential PH-1 doesn't count because it was released last year and SD835.

I'm just no longer excited with Xiaomi because I prefer closer to stock Android. It's why I don't buy Huawei or Oppo. LeEco's is just plain awful.
