        Stupid.

Know the difference between FREE and ZERO UPFRONT PAYMENT.

People sign-up on a 24 month contract but end up paying a cancellation fee for the handset if they want to get out of the contract.

Whereas FREE is even if you're on a contract and not yet done with it, as long as you want to get out of it, you DON'T pay for the handset.

This is partly the beauty of Apple's integrated approach. iOS runs very well, and get the job done. At the end of the day, that is what consumers want anyway.

What after 2-years of contract? Will the customer be able to change their GSM operators according to their local Telecommunication Network?

Uk, 22 Oct 2011The UK has one of the most competative mobile markets int t... moreIts not just the UK that has the competitive market, where you can get 4S for free on 45pound / $60 AUD / $60 USD per month plans.

It's MOST PLACES outside the USA. Europe, NZ, Australia, Asia. You name it. Its NORMAL.

America has been ripping customers off for years and years and I for one can not believe you're just now working this out.

Oh my god. You have to be kidding.

iPhone 4S is free here too, on a $60/month or higher plan. (Australia). 4S 64 GB is free on a $80/$90/month plan.

You guys are getting totally ripped off having to pay such a high monthly fee just to get a 3GS for nothing.

Free highend phones on contract have been the norm for years and years outside of the US. It's time the US stops ripping off its customers with arbitrary upfront partial subsidies.

It was only possible move which doesn't make fragmentation over another iPhone and also every apps worked without need to change them. Apple had then huge appstore already, so they had to think it very carefully what to do and how to make it easy for devs.

You call it bad choice, i call it very good choice if you see where apple is now. I bet Apple knew better than you which is good move to make ;)

All this news about the iPhone 4S getting swooped off the shelves like crazy isn't legit around some parts lf the world, like here. We don't have the option to pay for it monthly, so we gotta cough up a whooping $2000 for the 32 GB version. The 3GS is out of stock here.

Sorry, I was the one who misread the text. It is free ON a 2-year contract. Even so, it is still a pretty good phonr and this may be a good deal if one does not need that very latest tech on a device.

I've just recently sold mine and miss it :( But I'm getting a SGS 2 until the contract on my N8 runs out. By then hopefully the iphone 5 will be out :D

I'm not surprised, i'v been saying apple did iPhone 3GS to be too good for it ages. I mean its very hard to believe it's released 2009, im still using it and its very smooth and runs almost all the newest games butterly smooth. If you don't mind bad resolution screen or not that good camera, it's very good product. And also it got iOS5, which was surprise for all and it runs it very well.

3GS is best example about how well apple optimize their hardware and software. I think this is going to be very good rival for cheap and midrange android phones, where Apple hasn't had product before.

So things are looking extremely good for Apple.
