Weekly poll: the best flagship and best mid-ranger from IFA 2018

02 September 2018
The Xperia XZ3 and Axon 9 Pro are pretty lonely at the top as this year's IFA was focused mainly on mid-range devices.

The dark ages of mobile. Manufacturers omitting headphone jacks just to be able to sell more expensive, low quality bluetooth ear pieces... Just to rub it in, most of them put a useless notch on the display.
But, at least you get to pay premium prices for nothing! That's good, isn't it?

Sony XZ3 and HTC U12 Life for me.

Walter C. Dornez, 02 Sep 2018Honestly, at this point I've gotten used to it. At least HT... moreWell, if you got used to it, good for you. But OEMs should listen to consumers, not the other way around where manufacturers dictate what consumers should have.

Most of us have an ecosystem that relies on 3.5 mm jack, which has existed since decades. This includes speaker systems as well as expensive headphones. Other than greedy, planned obsolescence, there is no motive to remove such a versatile, easy-to-use solution like the 3.5 mm jack which has never offered us any trouble.

Sure the facility to use wireless audio has been available for years and it's good that they continue to improve. But it should not be at the cost of killing the harmless 3.5 mm jack. And not all of us want to go through the hassle of charging yet another device (in this case, a wireless headset).

That's why I like Samsung to a degree. No notch, no killing of the 3.5 mm jack. Only adds new features, without removing useful old ones. They even listened to customers and remedied the wrongs of the S6, by bringing back waterproofing and SD card slot in the S7.

Didn't care what the spec were, voted for the only two full screened phones without a vagina.

AnonD-632062, 02 Sep 2018Both flagships - no 3.5 mm jack. BAD!Honestly, at this point I've gotten used to it. At least HTC seems like their coming around

Sony Xperia XZ3 has compensated us a lot with their big upgrades. My only complain would be their choice of fingerprint sensor positioning which is difficult to reach even on landscape mode.

Bulky and ugly XZ2 is totally being condemned by me last time. Bravia OLED technology is a very much welcome feature, as we will be looking at the screen almost all the time when we are holding our phone.

I'm waiting for Xperia XZ3 Premium to change their fingerprint sensor placement. Under display fingerprint sensor perhaps. Sony should make an Android One phone for their lower mid range or high midrange segments.

                Um, no notch please

Flagahip I voted XZ3 which is the most exciting Song flagship since Z5P
And best mid range is tough between Honor Play and LG G7 One

I was actually going to get an Xperia XZ1 Compact for $230 on Craigslist a couple months back. Glad I didn't because getting a brand new Essential Phone for $249.55 (tax included) was way more worth it especially since it already has Pie and Andy Rubin liked my tweet after thanking him.

I still have never owned a Sony smartphone. I did own a Sony Ericsson T616 but that's it. And I spent over $2000+ on PlayStation's ecosystem last year. Maybe someday I will. If this XZ3 was only as tall as the Essential or their XA2, I would want it even more. Too tall for my taste. It's why I rarely carry my V20 around.

I would more interested in sony xperia xz3 if it had the same price as zte axon 9 pro. Both phones are made in china and will not have two years of software support from manufacturer. Unlocked bootloader would save the devices from becoming obsolete so fast.

                        No Xiaomi phones, can't vote

Sony and LG for me because I like both brands. I like Sony more for video games and films. I can't believe the LG G7 One's Snapdragon 835 is now a midranger. My $224 Essential is ridiculously fast on Pie. Faster than my og Pixel when I first got it with Nougat 7.1. We can't trust the Chinese too much even if they are cheap. We should be rooting for Sony and LG.

The XZ3 design is underrated SEXY. One of the best non-notch designs. Sony's issue has always about value. While LG's issue is always about software. Now they made it into a Nexus/Pixel device. If LG can price it at $350 or lower, they will have a hit. It's the Pixel 2 XL with LG's own branding and hardware.

No interest in the Honor Play. Poco F1 has better value with an SoC I'm more comfortable using.

This time they missed on dual camera setup,,Its always been hard to me to understand Lg's Strategy. Why they always cannot fullfill the requirements in the phones, somewhere they lacks the memory combinations somewhere the camera weather it is dual camera setup or in terms of higher megapixel front camera, somewhere in terms of rear designs of phones (this years too many phones of them having almost year old design) so the question is that ,are they studies everything or not before introducing new phones.

The LG G7one fixes the biggest flaw with the LG G6, V30 and G7:
                              software quality and support.

This is the best AndroidOne phone released, so far. It's basically a Nexus. A Nexus 6X? Nexus 7? Nexus G? Not sure. However, what will make or break it is price.
If its priced US$350 or lower, it will be a hit. Which is roughly GBP400, EU450, INR35,000 and CNY3,500 or lower. If they do something stupid (like Sony would do) and price it incorrectly at US$500 it will flop, effectively competing with flagships and iPhones.

For LG to compete (or compete well) at this segment against the likes of the PocoF1, BlackShark, Mi8, OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6t, Huawei Mate 10 and the Samsung Galaxy S8+ it has to do more.
It has to have the single-camera itself have the 120' wide-angle lens. Perhaps provide dual front-facing stereo loudspeakers (be it "symmetrical notch"). It has to reduce the bezel size from ~70% to ~80% Screen to Body ratio, probably by upgrading the aspect ratio from the stupid 20:9 to a less-weird 17:9 shape. Or make the meaningless upgrade to the QSD 845 chipset.
