Once upon a time, long long ago I had the Sony T630 (2003) and then no more Sony until Xperia Ultra and none since.

BTW doesn't Sony use AMOLED in their latest xperia?

OLED is a fantastic display technology, but the pentile implementation (which is solely to save money) leaves a lot to be desired. Just think about how many years Samsung has been making AMOLED. They were able to make a small 4.7" 1280x720 RGB amoled display in 2013, so they should easily be able to make a 1440p in a +/- 6" device now 5 years later. Do you really not agree?

      However LG's 1440p IPS displays are properly sharp and also great for VR, second best after Sony's 4K displays such as the one in XZ2 Premium.

      Don't know much about books, and less abaout magazines, but from a quick read around the web I found that magazines usually use 300 dpi, or lower, even half of that for half tones. Books are usually done using offset printing plates (solid shape). So for text there really isn't any dpi in that sence, but equivalent to betwen 1200 to 4800dpi, with 2400dpi being most commonly used. Pictures are still 300 dpi for the majority, although there are those that can go to 400-450 dpi for pictures (considered very high end).

        Human eyes can actually see clearly to about 500ppi without much strain. Most books/magazines are commonly printed at 300dpi but photography books are printed at around 500dpi on glossy paper to make it as sharp/detailed possible for us to see.

        So yes, we can still see a slight difference between 1080p and 1440p screens. Most 1440p flagship screens on smartphones are pretty much the Maximum our human eyes can see relative to screen size & normal viewing distance.

            I can't tell a difference between 1080 and 1440 though, but I know that 1440 is mainly for VR.
            The S8's display is a bit smaller and maybe that's why you don't see any visible difference.

                  Not a surprise, 1080p display is the PERFECT BALANCE of Quality and Battery Life. Having a 4K, QHD simply makes no difference to quality unless you see pixels in your "bionic" eyes. Anything above that 1080P SACRIFICES battery life. Period.

                        Good ever since mobiles killed VR (no portable Netflix, etc) above 1080p resolutions became redundant.

                        If/when VR makes a return, then 4k should be the minimum resolution ...

                                        I can't believe how some people keep advocating 4K!
                                        It all boils down to pixel density: if you can't see the pixel when you stick your eye into the screen at 400ppi then you wont see a difference at any higher density.

                                        However: if screen content is optimized for a resolution and it's displayed on another then pixelation may occur.

                                        A 1080 video is best viewed on a 1080 screen and a 4K on a 4K as down/up sampling may introduce artefacts.

                                        Anyone who can't believe me, there's a ton of explanatory vids on YouTube. Still, I'm open for new info (scientific not personal feelings ;p)
