30 September 2018
With each release, smartphones are getting bigger and bigger by the year. Is that good or bad?

Sort by:

The dimensions is bigger and even bigger every year, looks like next year can reaching 7inch display and completely a common size.

Every phone I've owned since the original HTC One M7 has been just slightly wider than I would like, and short of entry level models the problem is only getting worse.

Jon.SWE, 02 Oct 2018Seems really wasteful to have the whole screen light up beh... more...Actually it existed in (at the least )THREE colours for the Note 5: Deep blue, Silverish, and Goldish. (None of them backlit)

Jon.SWE, 02 Oct 2018Seems really wasteful to have the whole screen light up beh... moreMaybe that was their original plan, many Galaxies ago (the concept have existed at the least since Note5)?

Could have made sense if they had a 'cheap' non transparent, and then a more complex and more expensive somewhat transparent "Pro" variant of it.

If so, it would be obvious to just have one software, and it is stil basically the same, that just have been adjusted slightly for since generation 5 for the 6, 7 and 8, long after they had to realise that there as not enough sales to have TWO variants for each device...

But it certainly seems like a crazy waste of power for a non transparent keyboard with an AMOLED display...

EskeRahn, 02 Oct 2018Just investigated a bit further. And believe it or not a) ... moreSeems really wasteful to have the whole screen light up behind the keyboard cover, though.
If it was a more expensive production, they could have tried the Keyboard Cover Pro, a slightly more expensive version.

shortkey, 01 Oct 2018The ideal smartphone right here: under 62 mm body width, u... moreIf you make that at those dimensions, the battery life should be good too.

Nothing wrong with large batteries? Of course not, but most of the time phones today don't last any longer on a charger than phones did a year or two ago, despite the supposed increase in soc efficiency.

Good if it's interest from some consumers, if not ??? I think it's just a mere trend no more. I do not mean presumptuous and disrespectful to some manufacturers. I think Samsung and Sony have the balance in designing their device body, they are very precise and accurate in determining something good. Unlike most other producers who can only imitate and join in (I really appreciate what Samsung and Sony have done).

I always liked big phones, as long as they fit in my pockets. So far not a single device I've owned so far was too big, so 5.9" 16:9 is great.

152 x 76.5 x 8 is the perfect body for me...there are phones that has screen size of 5.5 or 5.7 or 6.2 is the max screen in this phone body...

Chip you are missing the point "The original Galaxy Note had a 5.3" screen and a footprint that's 1% smaller than the 6.4" Galaxy Note9...." Phone sizes grew bigger first & I did not like it even then. Many people still prefer smaller dimensions. 4.8" to 5.5" screen with very less bezels would be great with decent specs.

That's when I saw that you're using your phone for watching animes and Korean dramas! XD

I hate smartphones with bigger screen sizes above 5.5".
They should be handy(compact). My choice of perfect screen size is 4.9", 5", 5.2" 5.5" max with best of all features.

S6 User, 01 Oct 2018Yes, I would be happy with 1cm depth on any size phone, esp... moreI'm certainly with you here! Let's get devices designed for the human anatomy, and not just some silly designers boring lines....

And this goes for the UI-guidelines of the OS too!!! Phablets would not be so bad, if they could be put in a mode, where the full display is used to show info, but all interaction is limited to a user selectable area each user can reach comfortably with their thumb!!!

But on the device body. If you take a standard phablet, you can easily put two-three pencils behind it lengthwise while holding it in one hand, with the same grip.... And this space could be used for a larger battery!!

PLEASE give us back the removable backs and batteries, so we can be offered more than one type/size of battery back-pack. My ancient Samsung S300 had THREE different battery-packs - and that was 15(!!) years ago... https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_s300-375.php

And please anyone don't answer me the BS on thick devices if the battery is removable, here is one 5.9mm thick - and that is over ten years back
                                https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_u100-1854.php
And more recently e.g. the 6.7mm of the 2014 Samsung Alpha https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_alpha-6573.php

And add a mm for a pack with 2800mAh and an IP67 rating.
                                e.g. 7.9mm for https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s5_(usa)-6338.php

Non-removable batteries are ALL about planned obsolescence...

...This would ALSO make it easy to offer an optional sliding keyboard back-pack for the same device.

The same device could reach a BROAD spectre of usage patterns.

I would LOVE to have a device like that, and use the keyboard back for daily productivity, a minimal slim battery-back for the dinner jacket, and a large back for the small trip...
