I don't know why people think this is such a big deal. I live in China and i've done this to my xiaomi mi 8 se. Google services work fine if you get the right stuff to do it.

screw this company. been a fan for years, but this time I had to wait for 15 days and also rid any sort of warranty by unlocking the bootloader just to have access to google. a very shitty
move, considering how few devices they had in stock before new years

i have completely stopped using MIUI OS due to privacy reasons. recent versions of MIUI is full of advertisements and shady background processes from China.

Jí Lié, 01 Oct 2018Disgusting ui full of advertising. Hate xiaomi now. Hate ad... moreAdvertising? If you use global version od MIUI 9 or 10, and if you have disabled recommendation in system apps like; Security, Music, Downloads, Filemanager, you're free to go (without ad's). If not, well, there is a stock Android (known as androidone) for those users with less basic knowledge, just turn on phone and that's it. Ok maybe they don't have 1/3 options in UI, but that's a price. :D

What's not mentioned is that this was a measure Xiaomi implemented to stop shady retailers from being able to quickly flash unauthorized (and potentially malware-ridden) ROMs, and protect the consumer. But as mentioned, normal consumers can still simply request a bootloader unlock (mine was granted within 24 hours), and flash the global ROM as per normal. So not really much of an issue, other than just having to wait a little longer to flash the ROM of your choice.

Actually this is already in place with the dev versions of miui 10. I had the dev version of miui global on my Mi mix 2s bought in China, and after updating my phone it would not boot anymore, only displaying the recovery menu and "this version of miui is not compatible with this device". There was no warning before and this was just a regular ota update .
This seems to happen when receiving the update to Android 9, not Miui 10(I was already on Miui 10 before).
Thé only solution I found is unlocking the bootloader and reflashing the latest global version with fastboot. Otherwise my phone was pretty much bricked. This of course deleted all of my data so do backup before this happens to you.
Now I am running the latest android 9 based global dev rom without a hitch, also got one more ota update since then and didn't get bricked.

Nice and not really a problem.
First thought here is my Mi Max 3 with a nasty fake rom lol.
Second is my Honor Note 10 and Honor 8X Max have 6 apps i cant uninstall and 3 of them i have good use for, but then again... i can delete all the Google stuff i never use and this is with a Chinese rom for use in Denmark (Europe)... Love this phone :-D
Many other phones i had with original international rom, had even more bloatware, then my Chinese phones.

We can also install Xiaomi.eu ROM to circumvent this issue. Once these Chinese phones meant for China are successfully installed Xiaomi.eu ROM, they are free from ads, bloatware except for Google services being preinstalled.

These are old news. Already known and relevant for locked bootloader.
Unlocked phones can be flashed with global but then the bootloader cannot be relocked.
