People want bigger screens, yet they have troubles with their phones fitting their pockets and then gadgets like those watches emerge. In old days we had compact phones, and if you wanted bigger screen - you had a tablet aswell.
And plenty of tablets cost pretty much the same as those watches, not to mention better battery life, and all other advantages...
So, make compact phones great again!
