The samples from P20 Pro and this one reveals oversharpening applied. Pixels and recent Galaxy's flagships have better cameras than this one. DxOMark should be more precisely to determined the best camera.

I still have a Nexus 5X and 6P and actually the photos from the 5X/6P are just better for my eyes (more natural, not 'artificial') than photos from the P20 Pro. I was so disappointed, I sold my P20 Pro and bought a Pixel 2 XL. I mean it has a very good camera of course but just not my taste... Nexus/Pixel users will understand. :)

Superb triple camera combination. Glad they finally accepted that the monochrome camera wasn't useful enough and ditched it for a more useful extra wide angle camera. The Triple Camera of the Mate 20 Pro looks awesome. Even better than the Pixel 3.
It could easily be the best smartphone camera of the year.
But, did they remove OIS from the main 40 MP camera in the Mate 20 Pro?
That would be a downgrade, because the P20 Pro had OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) in it's main 40 MP camera.

As someone who had P20 Pro - I can say that my guess would be that their camera is overhyped again. Photos on P20 Pro looked far from natural to me, they looked artificial. So it does have good camera but not nearly as good as Huawei wants you to believe.
And for some reason, Pixel was still king of photography, despite having less cameras...

The only phone I have seen from Huawei that actually took good photos, _at least for a
pixel peeper like me_, was the Nexus 6P.
I have grown used to the disappointment I feel when looking at all the new reviews and
zooming in at 100% and seeing almost all phones applying too much noise reduction
and sharpening. Some of the few exceptions are the last Nexus models and the Pixel
models. But those phones are not available in big parts of the world.

The photos from mate 20 are good, however, mate series and P series both have different color characteristics... P series have a more saturated and contrast color while the Mate have accurate color. As for me personally I like P series color...

there's no argument about superiority of bigger optics and sensors on proper cameras compared to smartphones. currently, we have no technology to miniaturize image sensors in the same way it is done with transistors in an soc (or at least none that is publicly known), so the camera modules depends greatly on the amount of light it can take in and spread unto the image sensors. the very little difference in size of camera modules that can fit into ever thinning phones makes it difficult to confirm the better performance of particular modules over others- the jpeg being judged here undergoes layers of processing so they end up looking good. in conclusion, the better guage of performance for smartphone camera should be in the raw output.
