Google will charge OEMs for pre-loading its GApps

20 October 2018
This could result in a small increase in Android smartphone prices in Europe.

I thought pre-l... morehow is it dumb to make EU consumers pay their fine? and what kind of fine might it be if you consider that the EU commission, who' surrounded by 30.000 lobbyists in brussels, gave google time until 2020 with their tax loopholes like "a double irish with a dutch sandwhich" to escape with 16 billion euro? source: the verge "Google still exploiting tax loopholes to shelter billions in overseas ad revenue"

That sounds really dumb for Google's part. I thought pre-loading apps in a smartphone is one of the best strategies to have your app being used by people.
Anyways, this is a huge win for consumers as they won't be stuck with apps they never use.
All it needs pre-loaded is the Play Store

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2018I did not get your part about 'in Windows, you can install ... moreIn the past, Google has threatened with not giving access to their "free" services if OEMs choose to make smartphones using another OS. That's the issue being solved here.

Besides that, the end user pays the price of that kind of stuff one way or another.

Finally we will not be forced to use Google's mediocre services. Even preinstalling Chrome is a crime. You can't charge something no one is willing to buy. Competition will surely make space for manufacturers who are willing to sell cheaper stock phones. Even now I use almost exclusively Microsoft services because of the functionality, they sync better with my pc, they look and feel better.

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2018You talk as though Google is some illegal company that has ... moreGoogle is not breaking many or any laws right now because there are no such laws yet. However, they are breaking people’s rights to privacy and they are breaking all the rules for ethics and morality.

Those who use any google products do not understand what they are doing and definitely do not understand how google is affecting their decisions and information sources.

So glad I ditched all of their services and products, moved all my accounts to different providers, started using duckduckgo, and got rid of my android phone and got an iPhone instead.

I don't think it can be called a fine if Google can basically just crowdfund the amount.. I only see the end user suffering.. Cant eu just chill..

FullmetalJun, 21 Oct 2018You're wrong! Android actually lets u install everything f... moreNo, it's similar to when Intel was fined for forcing PC manufactures to discriminate against AMD components. Same as when MS was convicted forcing OEM Windows on laptop vendors etc.

I don't argue that Google Maps is the best and nobody really wants to install a substitute, whether from Play Store or some shady apk from elsewhere, especially if it's free. I'm arguing the point that Google should not be forcing those apps on phone manufacturers if they want access to Play Store (which we know they all want/need). EU antitrust laws forbid such abuse of monopoly and now, it's nasty from Google to start charging for something that's free.

At $2 over billions of phones, all the development cost could be paid for.

Revenue should also only come from sales and services that 100% respect people's privacy and data.

It's that the requirement to install all GApps suite when OEM only needs PlayStore. Users can always install other GApps from PlayStore, hence, not actually required to be preinstalled (which can't even uninstalled when user want to). And here we are, forced to have all those apps when we only need some.

Preinstalling and making something default affects its usage statistics. As I said, Google making such shady deals (install Chrome and Search, if you wan't to install Youtube) was hurting competitors; And Google did take advantage of android to accomplish that.

Imagine there are elections, and major candidate made a deal with administration, so your vote will cast to him in default, unless you specifically vote against.
Would you call that a fair ?

The "you have alternatives" argument it's a joke, yes, I know, about alternatives, but many people don't know and Google search's defaultness is not making any good in that situation.

                                    Got it ?
                                    I doubt.
