Interview: Huawei CEO, Richard Yu talks Mate 20, Nano Memory cards, and foldable 5G phones

- Why no 4K@60?!

- 23 Oct 2018
It's very disappointing that the Mate 20 Pro can't shoot 4K@60 but only @30!
With it's new 7nm, it still can't do what the iPhone and some Androids can do with older SoCs!

Instead of making the sd card smaller become a NM card, why don't just making 1 Terabyte with Micro Sdcard dimension because NM card is way too tiny if lost it will be very difficult to find it back moreover if the photo music document is very important and drop the tiny NM card on floor will it have durable protection?

AnonD-558092, 23 Oct 2018If the first words of a comment is enough to judge of it's ... moreThe A9 2018 isn't even on sale yet and this guy here says it has lower quality. That guy isn't serious at all. He just assumes that because it's not a flagship, it has lower quality image. This is speculation, coming from a CEO. That guy is bogus.
"Yes, you can see this (Mate 20 X) is a better experience than [the Switch] for the young people. I don't have time to play games myself but this is a better gaming solution for young people." Lol. He clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. No, a phone isn't a better gaming experience than a Switch. It's not a bigger screen that makes a device a gaming device. Nintendo has proven that the SoC isn't what makes a device a gaming device.
"The Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X are IP67 or IP68, why is the Mate 20 only IP53?
We could have made it IP68, but IP53 is enough protection from water damage for most people who might drop the device in water and quickly fish it out, it'll be okay. IP53 is also a little bit cheaper."
Wow just being cheap. Just to avoid consumers making claims about the superior IP68 protection, they chose a lower protection. Man Huawei is cheap
Man i replied before to all your this half of that is a lie and other half is jjust your opinion or false dreams.

"Putting 4 lower-end sensors on a phone is very easy to do. While putting three high-end sensors is very difficult."
...is entirely BS. I know he's attacking Samsung. There's no merit to that jab. The only sensor in that setup that could be considered "high end" is the main 1/1.7", the other two are industry standard small, and Apple got more DR out of their small sensor through SmartHDR than Huawei could.
"...it was invented by Huawei..."
...is a severe exaggeration, I could say with certainty that at least as far as 2 years back little workshops in Shenzhen offered a service to file down certain models of MicroSDs carefully to a smaller size and half the original thickness so that they could be stuck together with a SIM into a "hybrid card" into hybrid slots that officially only take either a second SIM or a MicroSD(when properly stuck together both cards are detected and function normally). All Huawei's actually done is release "pre-filed MicroSDs" that fit into essentially the same slot and name them "NanoSD".
I pity the ingenious workshop in Shenzhen that actually invented this whose innovation has been plagiarized by Huawei.

AnonD-731363, 23 Oct 2018Oh man wake up.
Camera of Samsung A9
MAIN CAMERA Four 24 ... moreBeauty is subjective. Anyone can make a 2K EUR phone. Price isn't the matter. And please explain why exactly my "more protection means more quality" argument makes zero sense? Or you are too busy reading only 1% of my opinion and creating groundless comments? That's what I thought.
Again you assume. How do you know I'm clumsy? Oh sorry, I am not. Using naked phones for years, incl. glass phones. No scratches, no shattered glass, no issues at all. So am I clumsy and careless or are you wrong? That's what I thought.
Who here ever mentioned "drowned phones"? That's what I thought.
And that's not because you never tried real games that you can relegate my opinion to "nonsense blabbing". Do I call your opinion stupid? No? Then why do you treat my opinion like this? You are salty you know your opinion is flawed so instead of finding real arguments you resort to such uncivilized manners.
Once you learn to respect other's opinions and how to be civilized, we can talk. If you don't, feel free to "argue" with a wall. That's the only way you could ever win an argument. Bye.

AnonD-731363, 23 Oct 2018Yes and its not irony i read all the topics and i can read ... moreIf the first words of a comment is enough to judge of it's content, then your dystopian reality is one I don't want to live in. What if I said "I Hate Huawei"? Will you stop reading there? Or will you bother reading the "But I think this decision is great!"? No, the beginning alone is not enough to judge. That's reality man. Want to argue more with void arguments? Go on. But I won't give your opinion more respect than you give mine (read: none).

From the interview with Huawei CEO:
'What do you think about the phones which have retractable or foldable parts, such as cameras.
Oh, that's not a good idea. The mechanical parts take up a lot of space and also makes the water and dust proofing impossible. '
Doesn't the magic 2 have a slider?

Anonymous, 23 Oct 2018People are so short sighted they can't seem to understand w... moreNo no no. A MicroSD card fits at the rear of a Micro SIM card. Real reason is both royalties and upselling. If your past phone you used 100GB (32 in phone +64 SD), you need a phone with as much storage. So you need to buy the pricier 128GB model.
I don't see anything missing on the Note 9. Biggest battery the company ever put in a phone, big display, s-pen, SD845, 8GB RAM... The space argument isn't valid anymore

People are so short sighted they can't seem to understand why Nano Memory Cards are being made. There's a reason so many phones nowadays don't have micro sd slots, guys, there's no space for them. That's the sole reason these cards are being made, Huawei isn't even making any money off of them.
And at the end of the day this is only going to benefit customers. Phones with nano sd cards weren't going to have a micro sd card slot, take that into consideration.
Are other phone manufacturers going to follow suit? Yes. Didn't they follow suit with the hybrid sim card/sd slot? The glass backs (yes iPhone was first, but there's a reason they got rid of it after only one gen and everyone started having glass back after that one Honor)? Huawei doesn't get enough credit for their innovations to the industry.

1- Did you try the A9?... moreOh man wake up.
Camera of Samsung A9
MAIN CAMERA Four 24 MP, f/1.7, PDAF
8 MP, f/2.4, 12mm (ultrawide)
10 MP f/2.4, (telephoto), 2x optical zoom
5 MP, f/2.2, depth sensor
And mate 20 pro 40 MP, f/1.8, 27mm (wide), 1/1.7", PDAF/Laser AF
20 MP, f/2.2, 16mm (ultrawide), 1/2.7", PDAF/Laser AF
8 MP, f/2.4, 80mm (telephoto), 1/4", 5x optical zoom, OIS, PDAF/Laser AF
If you say that 5 or 8 Mpix are a lot better or equal to Mate cameras you must been really clumsy.
oppo Find X Lamborghini Edition dont have any water protection at all and yet its a SuperB flagship for 2000 euros. So your words more protection means more quality makes zero sense. So as i said its for a clumsy peopple in this case you which are careless with their phones.
Never had a water protection before and never drowned a phone.
Now i have Moto X4 and never suffered any kind of a water damage.
And because you dont like or dislike games its yours problem not mine or ours so dot try to flop youur nonsense blabbing on us.

Nano memory cards don't have a future. And so do these Mate 20 series phones using them. Get another phone with micro sd expansion. You deserve better storage expansion for the price these Mate 20 series phones offer.

AnonD-731363, 23 Oct 2018Man but he is all right.
Samsung using low end cameras.
... more1- Again you speculate and assume. I'll repeat over and over again that you have no credibility.
2- There is more to a phone than just the SoC. If you only see the processor then you don't know how to buy a phone. Go on with the LamePhone F1, with their high quality components and "screen issues caused by software" BS. I'm here with my amazing S9 which is objectively better in every aspect than this joke. You don't like Samsung? Good. You don't like AMOLED because you are still afraid of burn-in that are covered by warranty? Your loss. But I am not touching those phones with lower QA

That new Samsung isnt maybe out but huaw... moreYour post doesn't make any sense.
1- Did you try the A9? No? Then how can you say the cameras are of poor quality? Like mister CEJoke here, you just assume and speculate. 0 credibility.
2- Higher IP certification means your device is of higher quality. No, IP68 is not for clumsy people. IP68 is for people that look for a quality product and a OEM that will assume this quality. I need quality. I need liability for the quality. Without this IP cert, the OEM can deny you your rights in case something happens. And we bring our phones wherever we go. Protection against the elements is not frivolous.
3- Did you try the 20 X? No? How can you assume it's a great gaming experience? Oh so you speculate again... Your credibility went from 0 to -50. Also there is no real game on phones. Just ad-filled junks, pay-2-win, a ton of awful slots games, a sea of Candy Crush copycats... This alone proves the Switch is a better Experience

techperson211, 23 Oct 2018Apple is apple. It has a diff eco system than android. And ... moreHow will it backfire at them?? give a valid reason, our sim cards came from being big up to Nano sim and soon e-sim will be adopted. To simplify my point, i foresee this NM cards succeeding because most OEMs are finding ways in salvaging some space in their smartphones in order to implement other Tech. Or is it because it is Huawei pushing this innovation so it wont succeed??! wake up dude! Apple can not even bundle a 10W fast charger with their phones , i wonder what if one day they put a 4000mah battery on there phones i guess people will be paying 5000 dollars only to experience that endurance LoL......
