Apple iPhone XR sold 9 million units in its opening weekend, still short of predictions

29 October 2018
Analysts predicted it would sell 10 million.

Anonymous, 31 Oct 20181080p AMOLED = same output resolution as a 720p LCD 1125p ... moreExtremely flawed reasoning, 1080p AMOLED is clearly much better than 720p LCD. A quick look at any Xperia Compact with 720p leaves no doubt that 1080p Amoled is very superior, just not quite as good as 1080p LCD.
Your math is based on a one dimensional matrix while displays are 2D, when factoring correctly in 2D youll see that 1080p AMOLED is AT LEAST as good as 882p. 1080 squared x3/2 (the subpixles), then the square root of that, 882. In real life one easily get 2.5 effective subpixels though, so the equivalent is 985p, ie you cant tell the difference at resolutions above 440 anyway so the points are purely theoretical. We did this back in the days of Galaxy S4 vs Xperia Z, only with magnifier could one tell text was better on LCD, on photos the differences were impossible to find.

Xr sales fell short of expectations because most people are smart enough to buy Xs and Xs Max instead, well worth the higher price. A used X is also a better buy, better camera, better display, cheaper, premium build with no plastic. The only edge Xr got over X is the support for dual sim through the use of an eSim.

Guess some people will always prefer buttons, IR blasters, 3.5mm jacks over gestures and bluetooth. Slow adopters of new technologies. Dont get me wrong thats totally ok and normal, its just how people are.

        Never befriended with IOS.
Its supports nothing apart the apple and thus i returned my device after 3 months.
Also the phone was thinking that its smarter than I. Which turns out into a huge problem.

Been an Android user for the past 8 years, but I switched to iOS exactly 1 year ago. Never looked back since then, but I still ask myself why I haven't made the switch earlier instead of bashing the OS without giving it a good run for its money. Now I think Android phones are a rip off.

                Anonymous, 30 Oct 2018Yeah... a sub 1080p screen in the year 2013+5 for $800 lol1080p AMOLED = same output resolution as a 720p LCD
                1125p AMOLED (iPhone X/XS) = 750p LCD
1242p AMOLED (iPhone XS Max) = 828p LCD
                1440p AMOLED = 960p LCD

The XR has an LCD screen of 828p resolution.
Phones with 1080p AMOLED screens have a real resolution of 720p in LCD equivalence.
1440p AMOLED screens have a real resolution of 960p in LCD equivalence.

So an 1080p AMOLED screen is in fact worse than the XR's 828p LCD in terms of sharpness/clarity.
A 1080p AMOLED screen is as sharp and clear as a 720p LCD screen.

There's also no excuse for that bad screen resolution on this price tag. I get that the camera might not be current top notch, and it's not even bad. Built quality and design are on point. It does lack features like 3D touch for example...
Good things about it are A12 chipset and 5 years of support. But is that worth that much money to you? In the same price range you get - better screen, better camera, bigger battery and more features on other manufacturers. True, iOS is smoother and you get better support - but you at least won't feel ripped off!

AMOLED = higher cost, but comes with zero brightness blacks and thus offers much better contrast than LCD, has better viewing angles, better colour potential, and is more energy efficient, especially with dark user interfaces.

RGB matrix = real resolution and pixel density is what the spec sheet says.

Pentile diamond matrix = real resolution and pix density is 1/3 lower than what the spec sheet says.

                                    AMOLED screens made by Samsung:

Samsung phones = all currently use the same pixel arrangement that was introduced with the Galaxy S5 in 2014.

iPhone X/XS/Max = DisplayMate tested the Apple iPhone X and it turns out that Apple's OLED, even though it is produced by Samsung Display, uses a slightly different Diamond Pixels - the fill factor of Apple's display is higher than in the Galaxy phones.

Some examples of what AMOLED Pentile/Diamond display resolution means when compared to LCD displays:

1080p AMOLED = exactly the same output resolution as a 720p LCD
                                    1125p AMOLED (iPhone X/XS) = 750p LCD
1242p AMOLED (iPhone XS Max) = 828p LCD
                                    1440p AMOLED = 960p LCD

In terms of pixel density, it looks like this:

                                    Samsung S9 (570 ppi) = 380 ppi (LCD equivalent)
Huawei Mate 20 Pro (538 ppi) = 358 ppi (LCD equivalent)
                                    Samsung S9+ (529 ppi) = 352 ppi (LCD equivalent)
Samsung Note 9 (516 ppi) = 344 ppi (LCD equivalent)
                                    iPhone X/XS/Max (458 ppi) = 305 ppi (LCD equivalent)
                                    Samsung A7 (411 ppi) = 274 ppi (LCD equivalent)
                                    OnePlus 6/6T (402 ppi) = 268 ppi (LCD equivalent)
                                    Samsung A9 (392 ppi) = 261 ppi (LCD equivalent)

*Note that 300 ppi and above (LCD equivalent) is the density at which the normal, healthy human eye cannot see individual pixels at a distance of 12 inches (30 cm) or more. And most people would only start noticing pixelation at around 250 ppi because they don't have perfect vision.

**It's harder to notice pixelation in AMOLED Pentile/Diamond displays because the rendered pixels don't have a square shape like they do in LCD displays.
