New mini LED-backlit LCD panels to challenge OLED displays

02 November 2018
They are cheap and easy to make and can majorly enhance the current LCD industry.

MicroLED can't come quick enough to replace OLED...

Seriously I'm tech guy and i was thinking about this on yesterday night, what if back light of lcd converted with the led as same pixel available in lcd, that makes pure black thing like amoled, lol

Now, these cheap manufacturers wi... moreOLED is far from omnipotence, it's ONLY suitable for non static applications, like TV, ad billbord(if one company can afford that big of oled) DSLM viewfinder & backscreen, or smartphone for a strech. For monitor, graphical menu interface display, it's very impractical because of burn in and degradation
sorry mate, LCD won't die, cause they are cheaper, long live, brighter and most of all, still evolving
Micro led might kill LCD if, it's can be produced cheaper than LCD itself in set volume

Now, these cheap manufacturers wi... moreTruth is Oled panels will die as well and get replaced by just micro leds. ,so this is a step forward to getting a panel made up of just RGB leds in a back panel.. the fact your blind to this and think Oled will always remain superior shows your intelligence level.. check out Samsung’s micro led tv as they call it which is just really a LED tv.. unless you so hyped on salesman’s terms in that case it’s a true LED tv.. or a RGB Led tv

With LCD being on he cheaper side, I'd always love to see it pushing forward as it offers an option for people on a tight budget. When the OLED is as cheap as LCD maybe then I'd wish for its retirement.

With micro LED, LCD should, in theory, offer deeper blacks and require less power to operate, which is a win-win IMO.

Max, 02 Nov 2018I honestly don't get it. Why would anyone be excited about ... moreBecause , it won’t have burn in issues , and the due to Oled’s organic layers that suffer from degradation from use and heat from being used to display the bright colours. As such micro leds won’t have this issue and even if it doesn’t match a OLED to start with give it 2-3 months of usage and I bet it will look better.. unless you can fix the OLED properties of burn in which imo it wouldn’t then be called OLED , as you would be required to lose the organic layer.
To be blunt this is the step forward that will lightly make OLED faze out within the next 5 years as such by having 9000 micro leds you can get them to turn on and off like on a Oled as such true blacks.
The different is you would need a led for each colour e.g true RGB led. And possibly a led which has just white to save using the RGB leds to create white. To save power.

Oh, just die already LCD. Now, these cheap manufacturers will make OLED screen rip offs out of these new panel. OLED panel would still be superior.

Compare to 4.000.000 pixels(QHD) and infinite contrast. So its about infinite difference in contrast and hdr difference like hdr on 2560x1440 vs hdr on prehistoric mms and the smallest allowed resolution there 128x96.
Better than 25pixels before but hardly rivaling OLEDs.

Max, 02 Nov 2018I honestly don't get it. Why would anyone be excited about ... moreIt actually is much cheaper to produce. The biggest shortcomings of OLED are power consumption and brightness, mini LED would be able to solve those while having a higher contrast than existing LCDs and more precise lighting while, once again, being cHeApEr. It‘s once again the fight between Plasma vs LCD, in this case just with the successors OLED vs mini LED. And we know which one won that. My prediction is Plasma -> LED -> OLED (only on selected ones like high end phones which need bleeding-edge technology) -> Mini LED (which will be widely used, also on TVs, monitors, infotainment displays, ...) -> Micro LED as the final, ultimate technology which will just get revisions in the future.

I have the S8+ and lemme tell you this : after about 1-2 hours of playing with it, my eyes are the ones burning, not only the display.. And it's set on basic, not that over saturated bs from Samsung called adaptive display.
AMOLED may look wow because of the blacks, but it does have it's downside as well. I miss LCD displays now.
Good thing this Micro LED displays are coming. Variety is the best!

Martin, 02 Nov 2018The new LG panels at the G7 are quite equal AMOLED, the G7 ... moreHow about contrast ratio? LCD is LCD no matter what (except one with micro LED), no one can beat AMOLED on the contrast ratio and the "battery saver" feature of the deep black wallpaper.

OLED panels degrade over time. They lose colour saturation, and burn-in issues are also real deal aswell. I think that OLED is just here to fill the gap before Micro LED is ready for mass production.

This is a nice step towards Micro LED and I am looking forwards to it.

I honestly don't get it. Why would anyone be excited about a technology that, at best, might manage to be _almost as good_ as another already existing one? I mean I might understand if the new one was a tenth of the cost of the old one or something, but that's very clearly not the case - $1000 phones won't suddenly start selling for $100 because now they can do the same thing with a different technology. AMOLED screens are definitely NOT platinum-coated unobtanium even today. So what's the big idea...?
