Samsung is reportedly working on a dual-core NPU for upcoming 7nm Exynos chipset

05 November 2018
The Exynos 7 9610 already features an AI co-processor, but this will be a more powerful design for flagship image processing.

I wish Samsung would stop underclocking their Exynos chips and just leave qualcomm in the dust

Whackcar, 05 Nov 2018Why are you selectively looking at single core performance?... moreI have not selectively picked anything. You are reading whatever you want from my post. It is a fact that Apple turn the mobile world upside down in 2013 with the A7, the first 64 bit mobile soc on the market by about 18-24 months. I vividly remember the Qualcomm cto at the time taken shots at Apple only to backtracked and was later dismissed. It is well documented on the web. It also came at a time when qualcomm had their infamous sd801 chip which was too had for most and was even worst than the sd800.

Apple's A7 was leading the single score by more than 50% while trailing in the multi-core by a mere 15%/20%. Those are facts, I merely pointed where it all started, you on the other hand took offence to it.

My posts on this page have nothing to do with fanboyism. I was just stating facts, then some fanboys got triggered. Not my fault.

Anyways, I'm done with this thread. These guys can win this argument if they want. For me it was about correcting right from wrong, not about "owning the sheep" or other Android fanboy stuff like that.

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2018It‘s great to see how the fandroids, so the extreme ones, e... moreThe difference between my post and yours is that i was talking about facts, and you're talking about opinions.

There is a lot wrong with the statements you've made in your comment, such as iPhone having the best camera in 2016 (when both s7 & Pixel were far superior), but I'm not going to argue with you as you're obviously a fanboy and can't deal with reality.

Also, i never denied that Apple has had a superior SoC since the last 3 years. They've been leading in that department, and I'm realist enough to admit that. The point I'd like to make though, is that one superior characteristic doesn't make the whole phone superior. Apple may have a better SoC, but there's a lot more to a phone than just that.

Lastly, In my opinion: Aside from the SoC, Android are better in everything right now. This is my opinion, and you can disagree with it as much as you please.

2010: hahaha Apple only has Single Core and 256MB RAM when Android has Quad Core and 1 GB RAM
2012: haha Apple lag behind in Benchmark
2014: haha Apple lag behind in phonebuff Speed Test
2015: Apple beats everyone in speed test: who cares about 1/2 second difference when you don‘t have a gud camera
2016: Apple has best camera on the market: who cares about 1/2 second difference when you don‘t have a headphone jack
2017: haha Android beat 1000 Dollar iPhone
2018: new iPhone with iOS 12 beats every android: who cares about 1/2 second difference when you have to pay 1000 dollars
(iPhone XR for 750 Dollars beats 1000 Dollar Note9)
Who cares about 1/2 Second difference wen u hv 720p Display lel

And I can guarantee that they will always find something to complain about even if the newest iPhone would be the perfect phone overall

                  a) the usage of bigger chips and better multi core score
                  b) the Switch to NVMe
And since then, they have been dominating. The iPhone X/8/Plus was not as great because of the lack of RAM optimization in iOS 11, but that has since been made better with iOS 12 and more RAM, but as iOS 12 is also available for the older phones, those should also be able to be on top of the performance ladder now

toukale, 05 Nov 2018Apple's SOC became the one to beat since 2013 when they mov... moreWhy are you selectively looking at single core performance? The performance of these chipsets is judged by the combination of single-core and multi-core scores. The combination of those individual scores is shown in overall benchmark app scores. Anyone who isn't a biased fanboy would know that Android leaded in those benchmarks until 2015.

It doesn't matter what reasoning Apple gave for their inferiority. What matters is facts, and facts tell us that Apple was behind Android at that time.

My previous post stays true. Don't argue for the sake of arguing. Argue only if you have something to bring to the table.

They have been ahead of the single score by a wide margins since. The only place they trailed was multi-cores where Apple restricted their chips for battery reasons although not by much. As soon as Apple lifted that multi-core restrictions they have buried everything else. Everyone who paid attention knew that Apple's soc's was ahead since 2013.

They only allow snapdragon, that's why huawei is having a hard time selling their phones in there.

MadMel, 05 Nov 2018US market rule is "only" SD or you are forbidden to sell.I'm not American, but what you're saying could very well be true. It would make sense why US has no problem with brands like OnePlus & ZTE (until the recent legal issue), while they straight up ban Huawei phones. They claim it's due to security reasons, but then how come all the Europe, Asia & the rest of the world has no problem with it? The real reason is something else.

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2018Funny comment Lol. Apple fanboys always get angry when anyone reminds them of the iPhone's history.

Actually, they stay angry in the present too, because iPhones just aren't good phones, ever. lol

AnonD-789972, 05 Nov 2018As one of the chipset maker they should go above and beyond... moreIn case if you don't remember, Apple wasn't always ahead in the performance section. They used to lag behind Android until 2015 or so. Back then Android fans used to make fun of iPhones for their inferior benchmark performance and iPhone users used to argue that the real-life performance matters more than benchmarks (this scenario has flipped now, quite amusingly). You can go back & see benchmarks of phones from before that time & you'll see that I'm right.

The reason Apple got ahead recently is because they've been investing heavily in their chipset division, and when you put heavy resources onto any project, you see massive growth in said project.

Companies like Samsung, Huawei or even Qualcomm itself could compete with Apple, and eventually even dethrone them. The question is, will they?

I've been saying it since a while. Samsung needs to abandon Qualcomm altogether and stick to their Exynos chipsets in all their phones worldwide, kind of like how Huawei has been doing lately with their Kirin chips.

Samsung's chips have been better than Qualcomm's since a while now, and the only reason they're close-by in benchmarks is because Samsung has to keep parity between their phones worldwide.

Once Samsung is free from Qualcomm's limitations, they will be able to push the boundaries and give proper competition to Apple. Obviously they will need to invest more heavily in their SoC department for this kind of outcome, but budget is not an issue for a giant company like Samsung.

As one of the chipset maker they should go above and beyond and should be very competitve.. but every year they are just catching up with other makers..

They should be trend setter and market leader..

I wish some chip manufacturer to surpass the Apple's raw power..
