New Samsung patent shows off dual foldable display design

14 November 2018
The "double sandwich" appears to have the overall layout of a smartphone and the folded out display real estate of a tablet.

You people are missing the point. Yes, patenting this doesn't guarantee it will ever come out, but that would be true if wasn't the natural direction this technology is following. Like any foldable phone is nothing but a prototype helping the development of a fully foldable tablet, which is what you can see in this design. It will be expensive and only a few will have it but after 5 years it might be as common as regular tablets are nowadays.

It makes sense to wait for future bigger releases. There will be a lot of bugs and I want a bigger screen folded and unfolded

This isn't a news unless announce the actual phone, if not you can make many patent but with nothing real stuff coming.

Anonymous, 14 Nov 2018This is nothing new. Its just a flip phone.. reinvented.... moreFirst time you've heard of US patent laws? Apple milked Samsung off half a billion dollars for rounded corners on a rectangular shape and animated bouncing, just because Apple did what patent trolls do to abuse the US system, patent it first.

We have seen some patent where the screen does NOT fold sharply but folds in a 'drop' or 'onion' like shape, so the curvature is 'absorbed' in the body of the device, letting the two fixed parts of the body meet completely. That could help.

Tonberry, 14 Nov 2018I absolutely love the idea of foldable screens, but it's go... morePerhaps selling to Chinese manufacturers would let the price go down. After all, they have been making some damn nice affordable phone

Those bezels are huge... i wonder how many generations will it take before we get bezel-less foldable phones with edge to edge displays... Probably a while.

I absolutely love the idea of foldable screens, but it's going to be insanely expensive for many years before the price can get reasonable. I wonder if it would be possible, as a cheaper alternative, to perfect bezelless screens and create a two screen phone like Axon M, except with no bezel at all on one side, to make the two screens align in a seamless way when folded out.

rolandudv, 14 Nov 2018I really do wonder how case companies will be making cases ... moreThere already is a flexible tempered glass and its not expensive. But fold at 90 degree and back? I am not sure it can stay on the screen, most likely it will come off. I work with tempered glass that's my job and i am not sure how they are gonna make a protector for this.

just only imagine the stress on that flex when you going to use the phone how many fold the you can make in an hour and a 1day ??? more fragile.

                          This is nothing new.

Its just a flip phone.. reinvented. Having need to patent this.. you have serious issue.

The tree part fold makes a lot more sense as this would give roughly 16:9 in both modes.

AND if it could allow both a "Z" and a "e" folding, it could fold the tablet to EITHER a phone with a display face OR full screen protection...

Also remember this old concept with a hardware keyboard on the back of one of the thirds!!!

But I see concept of it and how it might appeal to some people.

To sum it up, I just hope that folding phones will drop prices of regular ones once they emerge.

Waiting device like this and with S-Pen will be much better to let me leave Note Series
