Weekly poll results: manual sliders are the way forward

25 November 2018
At least until the tech to put cameras under the screen comes along. Then bar phones will rule once again.

In my experience (not personal, handling repairs for a carrier store back in the day), sliders were significantly less durable than clamshells, which were somewhat less durable than bar designs. I will avoid these like the plague until there are a few years of persuasive reliability data to convince me otherwise.

Agreed 100%. My favourite phone of all time was the Nokia N95 8GB Black, that I had back in the day. Although the camera was not covered by the slider mechanism the ergonomics of the phone were superb. It also did almost everything very well, from camera to stereo speakers.
A mix of the N95, Galaxy Note 9 S-Spen plus this slider Android phone would be ideal.

I think the Nubia's design is best: only one or two high quality cameras, and a small view-finder on the back.

You get the best quality for both selfies/video chat and other, and the front is clean and large, only screen.

It must also be cheaper than the whole mechanical thing plus 1-2 extra cameras and face/depth sensor on the front.

I like the slider idea too, and let it slide DOWNWARDS too, revealing a hardware keyboard like the BlackBerry Priv.

I wish we had no front facing camera options instead. I can’t believe some people consider them important enough to cut out the main display just for them.

Well most people wont care after month of use when they buy a phone with any of theses.

Manual sliders should become more common. A lot of us are sick and tired of glass slabs. These sliders bring freshness to an otherwise stale marketplace. I would also like to see a return of flip phones (the Samsung W series phones are exclusive to China). The smartphone marketplace badly needs variety and diversity.

A slider? A fcking slider? Really? Why's people so easy to manufacturer? I didn't see any reason for resurrecting an old style slider phone.

Customers will love and buy what the manufacturers tell them they should love and buy. THAT is the way forward.

you know, bar phones would have gotten higher votes if you guys hadn't put that atrocity of a phone to represent that!!

Then I prefer a notch instead of manual sliders. Dust and sand will cumulate inbetween the phone and slider which could lead to scratches. And how many times do you have to repair it? A slider is not durable.

But that's still going to take a while. We barely got a in-display fingerprint scanner this year, which is basically a in-display camera. Everyone would want this ideal, but it's going to take another while, most likely two years at the earilest

Transparent AMOLED is better. No notch. No slider. No mechanical problems and no instant blindness by staring at an awful notch. Perfect all-screen device.

why can't manufacturers just keep a simple screen design. they are making an easy situation in a worst case scenario. sigh!
