I remember having laptops that had swappable hard drives and dvd-rom. Only use for them was portable media which was useful back then when hdd size was like 120 gb...
nowawdays with streaming and large HDD sizes, do we need them? no. He is just drunk on nostalgia and good ol' days.

My suggestion on this one is greatly inspired by the game The Surge.
how about having a Core base which can accomodate a certain number of mods or slots. the higher core it is, the more it can accomodate more mods. prices may vary on how many slots does a consumer can afford or needs.
Then for the mods like camera mods, memory mods and etc. the higher spec the mod the more slot or core power it will consume. for example, a core of 16slots may a 8-slot camera, 4-slot memory and 2 slots for others, then you have a phone primarily built for pictures. or same slots with 2-slot camera, 5-slot memory, 5-slot gpu, 4 for others, then you have a basic gaming phone at hand.
Just my idea on a modular system.

Essential PH-1 uses wireless USB for accessories (pogo pins are just for power). Siri, Bixby, and Google Assistant all use offboard processing over wireless networks. Bluetooth speakers/speakerphones... To a limited extent wireless modularity is already here.

Wireless and bluetooth modules could be replaced in some laptops to match your country's channels.
Optical drives could be upgraded, and I've seen blu-ray drives for laptops as well.
If you have the tools, you can even upgrade the webcam if you find one that fits.. your warranty would be void then, though.

Days of modularoty are numbered even in notebook territory. Looks like portability and design won over usability. You buy any laptop these days and only thing you can change is HDD and RAM, thats it. Bad for consumers good for manufacturers.

Apparently Project Ara was shelved due to technology limits...
ie: Due to the parts being not "closely connected" (vs a more standard / traditional design) there was a slight but noticeable lag with interactions between some of the parts, this gave a diss-satisfying user experience when using the device...
Project Ara imho was just a bit too ahead of its time... so perhaps if the lag issue could be solved with improved technology that was not yet ready for Project Ara then perhaps another company could take the general idea and run with it... similar to what Apple did with the iPhone and iPad vs competitors at the time.

Hmm what happened to Project Ara , I kinda wanted it to come to life.. I assume there’s less money in selling phones if you don’t have to update each component , though I think it would sell well for many reasons , if you wanted a headphone jack you could have one , if you wanted a notch screen you could have one or if not go with a no notch and. More bezels. Also processor wise you could upgrade if you felt the need , the issue imo would be the different amount of variations as such how would the software work or would it detect parts on boot up to assign the correct software or load it if a new part is attached , all in all it still a possible idea.. just ahead of its time by 5-10 years imo.as in you want smaller modules that are Easyer to replace also probs no IP rating , but most phones now a days can withstand most wear and tear.
