iPhone 4 goes into 'self combustion' mode on a flight

29 November, 2011
Ends up producing copious amounts of black smoke and glows red without causing any physical harm to anyone.

AnonD-903, 29 Nov 2011All right, more info; at the very least, you sort of know t... moreZima :

ofcouse you are right , the way a phone has to work with the battery is different than a rc model .. the phone needs to have a long life relationship with the battery and therefor should not push the limits .

a model plain ore boat will need the best preformance and will push and squeeze every amp out of the lipo to get the most power.you can buy 20$ china crap model chargers but also high quality chargers with balance control and they are surely a lot better than a internal charge circuit in a phone.

that being said, sure we have different ways to handle and charge the battery's

all i am saying/questioning here is : is the balance between lifetime and performance good enough in the phone industry.

funny enough i use 3S packs 12V 2100mh lipo sets in my sons LEGO trains , he runs them for weeks, where a set of 8 Duracell penlites would stop within 8 hours...

that would make us scratch again. how far are we with battery techno and what would be possible in the phone world , concidering safety and performance. i think we could push the limit a little more with better chargers.. thats all.

*(plus, the logic of actual charger in the handset often wouldn't allow the battery to fail like that)

Thats what you get for buying overpriced cheap junk :)

Costs 150 dollars to make an iphone ( not counting shipments , assembly ) Just the parts .And the parts come from diffrent manufacturers and are assembled in china. And you pay 600-800 dollars for that .

Just buy a samsung . At least you know you wont get fails like this. They manufacture everything themselves.

tune, 29 Nov 2011rubbish ? maybe so .. i did some testing in Lipo batte... moreAll right, more info; at the very least, you sort of know that "the plug" is not actually the charger...

But, what you did is still a very bad idea. One which _leads_ to, one which dramatically increases the chances of... something under the discussion here, a catastrophic battery failure.

Batteries and chargers of mobile phones are very tuned to each other (not only by design; also the phone "knowing" a battery specimen after it charged it, how it's calibrated) - and one of priorities, one of purposes is _safety_. Which is greatly jeopardized by essentially force-charging any battery "externally" like you did.

Another priority is long life of a battery - even assuming* you did get more juice out of it like that, it would age much faster with such treatment (giving soon a much lower overall charge, anyway)

The way mobile phones treat batteries is very nearly optimal, tuned for usage pattern which is completely different from that of RC models (and notice how a typical place of failure of those won't result in flaming metal burns to anybody's skin; or how their users must follow safety procedures unknown with consumer handsets; or how you must know a moderately safe way to contain such mistreated battery, and likely you saw this more than one time), and also advanced (don't think of RC chargers as fancy, they are as expensive as they are largely for being niche products)

Realize how much could be saved in production, how much more money the boards and CEOs would get their hands on (so they have a very good motivation to do that, & pretty much the only which works with those people), if they could use significantly smaller batteries for the same overall effect.

*the numbers you claim are quite unlikely, mobile phone batteries should disable themselves (a final safety precaution, always better than fire) if mistreated to such a degree. Plus one other thing: the phone would have a flawed picture of how the battery was charged and how it will behave, so also of how much of it is really discharged over time - hence turning it off in part of the cases too late (of course it wouldn't nearly give 2x & up times; more likely is that you used it differently in the unconscious desire to confirm your expectations), also potentially dangerous.

Modern batteries have energy densities fairly comparable to explosives, do not misuse them (particularly those you keep in your pants)

I hope they change back to the original aluminium backing for the next iPhone. Yes, the all-glass design looks sleek but when you think about it, it's not a very smart idea. Apparently the next iPhone will be the one that Steve Jobs was most dedicated in so there might be some nice things coming.

Can't get a new phone till the end of next year so we'll see but I hate it when everyone at school has the same phone. I see kids that are 12 years old with iPhones which is pointless. Anyway, I'll see what looks nicer when the WP Apollo update comes out or the next iPhone. Android is out of the question and I'm leaving it after being with it since the beginning.
