The chin is there for the bottom of the display and connector. Why apple was allowed patenting a fold of other companies tech is another story and one more reason to hate patent wars.
Essensially this patent prevents Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Lenovo, and everyone else who is making full screen phones, from making the bottom bezel as slim as the other sides.

These companies Samsung and Huawei are like a small kids fighting on the sand for every toy.
How boring.
I really hope that Nokia wins again and becomes greatest mobile phone brand as it always and ever was.

Huawei innovated by releasing a corner hole design and Samsung copied it.
Proof - Look at the released dates of their respective phones.
This happens every time. Chinese copy cats print out their phones like crazy.
Future prediction ----
Only Chinese companies are left in the market. Other brands couldn't hold a candle when it comes to printing phones crazy fast.
Now the only competition is who can print fast. Patents and intellectual property are things of the past.

First is when Samsung announced that they will be launching the first foldable phone, Huawei joined the race. And now? Hole in the Screen? They are, again, competing (most likely, copying the idea) to be the first company to release one.
