MediaTek teases upcoming Helio P90 chipset with "groundbreaking AI"

29 November 2018
The P70 just made its debut in the Realme U1, but the chip maker is already looking forward to its next launch.

If the AI can cause faster benchmarks the more time you run a app.. then thats breakthrough.

    else its all marketing gimmick.

As an alternative to neural networks but totally deterministic. My model of the mind continues to be proven true. Anyway, just with all thus knowledge and 1st degree theorising, let me show you how you can identify a cats face in a picture, and it had to do with how our minds do it to:

Is thing round like a cats head, two triangles in.the right place

..tempered one who doesn't care what my search terms are and wants to just put his own in instead. The problems with neural network like solutions is they are being used as sloppy unbounded intelligence. When they were invented it was hypothesized that the image on the networks was like a dream with images flashing around the chip, but his accurate is a dream going be? Too fluid, and mad. In my own AI design since I was in primary school in the 1970's, I identified a bounded method to retrieve the correct information, which could be used as an alternative to neural networks

When I studied AI it was not sloppy at all, it was deterministic. Hence now they can convince an AI a car is a dog or something and Google answered that it's AI in search has the intelligence of a 6 year old, and about right to going on the search results I get, and a stubborn bad tempered one at that, who doesn't care

What should I even do with ultimate deluxe matrix triple phased AI processing unit emperor edition ultra? Find a cat between thousands dog in a photo? Groundbreaking Face unlock in 0.00001337s? Let the AI play my Mobile Legend to get 99kill and (-99) death?

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2018I hope it comes with at least A75/A55 cores (A76 preferably... moreIf history serves me right, it will be built on 16nm node, running 4x Cortex A73 at around 2.2GHz and 4x Cortex A53 at around 1.6GHz, with a slightly improved iGPU.

The only "upgrade" will be the NPU for AI-applications, and that will be nothing more than a big gimmick/marketing sales spin.

It takes MediaTek about 2-years to get up and chase the leaders, since they're only interested in making chips for TVs, Smart-Whitegoods, TV Boxes, and cheap phones (quantity not quality, price not performance).

ronn89 , 30 Nov 2018agree with u on the AI thing...100%.I agree with the others.
AI is quite important today, and it will become very essential tomorrow.... but not from our phones. The majority of the heavy lifting will come from AMD Ryzen cores processing things from the cloud and streaming the results to IoT and connected devices. Google will release a couple AI Gimmicks for Android in the future, but it won't affect actual use much.

The other area where AI will become noticeable will be in the cutting-edge GPU's of 2020 using new architectures at a refined 7nm lithography. 3D Gaming/RayTracing will be the showcase and fund the industry. However, it will get adopted into Automated Driving in cars in the near future (Tesla, VW, Audi, GM, Toyota, Kia). I can see Nvidia and Intel leading the pack, with interest from Alphabet and Apple.

PS: Cryptography (eg Bitcoin) are at the centre of creating this Neural Processing innovation.

Love the Community, 30 Nov 2018Can Mediatek stop making upcoming Midrange chips like this ... moreThey aren't able to sell flagship's soc...
                  X30 was...it was a commercial fail.
Powervr GT7400 Plus is a 4 cores version of the 6 cores GPU that Apple used on A10...frequency is a little bit higher on X30
You can compare a 4 cores PowerVR to a 10 cores Mali...
(Except on last generation on Mali G76, ARM doubles the size of the core).
GPU isn't that bad on X30...
Mt6595 was too some years ago, it was a fail too.

You'd better read courthouses decisions about Qualcomm. You will understand why competitors can't release flagship's soc if they don't release the smartphone themself (like Samsung or Huawei)...answers are in these acronyms : SEP, FRAND...

Mediatek choose cores to fit the process.

They aren't Qualcomm, they don't do things like putting cortex A57 on 20nm process!!!

Remove unfair SEP's fees from Qualcomm (according to courthouses decisions on China/south Korea/European Union/USA...) and no problem, you will probably see Mediatek with 7nm, Cortex A76 ans bigger GPU...

Now, Mediatek does what they are able to sell and does it well!

Can Mediatek stop making upcoming Midrange chips like this and focus on Flagship chips which there are more people wanting flagships than midrange?

Mediatek should go Dual Cluster (4x A76 and 4x improved A57) for their "Helio X40". Companies should ditch A55 and use A57. I don't know what type of GPU but the X30's PowerVR chip seems underwhelming so they should get some flagship grade graphics from PowerVR if they're still making these.

                            Oh, add some AI too.

Ai is a gimmicks. At least on phones. A tiny one for basic functions is okay but large one is waste of silicon spaces. Because 1000x more power AI cores only benefits like 0.1% of phone usage. Assign more silicon space for GPU or dsp, need one who can encode /decode latest codec (ie av1) on 4k 60fps

One area of low hanging easy fruit for companies to concentrate on is video camera functionality. Do you know that one of the top end cinema camera format is a version of plain old DNG raw format, called CDNG. You can encapsulate the individual dng frames in a container with metadata like Black Magic raw and cineform raw used. Bingo, a top end HDR footage format in raw, with metadata which can be used to describe and set the color and lighting levels frame by frame. Apple also has prores and prores raw formats. Gopro has a standardized wavelet format based on cineform and cineform raw they use. These are all easily licensable professional quality orientated formats and some even free. Support for those, with proper camera controls, is a high quality feature to offer users.

They require setting aside continuos file space (preallocation is best) with a fast filesystem, USB/card/wifi, GPU/CPU/media processing paths to macinmise resolution. The datarates ate high, but we moving to 128-512GB high-speed microsd, but a 3.2 USB port off the back of the phone can allow hit swapable batteries and flat drives to be plugged straight in to a case.

Currently, a lot of video camera functionality is na toy, and professionals resort to using cages to mount the phone with controllable lenses, with non standard applications. When you swap to video mode from photo mode, you loose a lot of "professional" functionality in standard camera apps. Really bad form, as standard camera apps so called "professional" control features aren't that good.

A ln aera that right now is usable, is multipoint computational photography. At the moment they use it to do lower quality bokeh. But when you have 4 or more equal lens/sensor combinations, you should be able to eliminate a lot more computational problems, to produce consistent results and better results on average, plus real 3D. But often even the twin lens mediocre computational photography is not used in video mode. But, in top tier phones, you should be able to do it at 4k, and Fullhd in mid tier, and even Standard definition+ given a custom hardware circuit on cheaper phones.

A proper 3-5 line 3.5mm powered head phone jack is another advanced music feature. Instead, Apple enjoyed free reign in the professional media sphere before, with the thee line headphone jack etc.

Now, one company Red, is planning a multipoint module for their phone, likely costly, when newer chips should be able to do it all in one phone. Hopefully they will use their redray codec technology, which can give a cinema quality 4k video in 9-18mb/s. So, there is plenty of room out there for codec improvement to accommodate professional level multipoint video files on phones. My own easier 8k 9mb/s visually lossless codec proposal, is on hold due to lack of finance and health issues.

Instead the industry sits on its hands while certain people charge big money for older style prosumer and other cameras. Its time to revist the camera while AI sorts itself out.

Whatever happened to their Helio "X" series?

More power efficient GPU's yes, that leads to better battery life, or ray tracing, but for normal game use?
