05 December 2018
Both Sony and Samsung announced 48MP modules this year. For comparison, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a 40MP sensor.

Also, Huawei happens to be the low-light leader as of late, and their phones have had 40 MP camera modules. Your point is moot.

Finally, Xiaomi back to the big sensor cults. Geez, i was endlessly thinking why they did that to the Mi6 - Mi8 after Mi5s. That was such a downgrade.

AnonD-706668, 05 Dec 2018Who will purchase this phone ? They crammed huge pixels in ... moreSheesh, how hypocritical you're.

Resolution are just number, and so as pixel size. It is as easy as accessing your camera settings.

I don't know much about camera, but i do know how basic physics and logics. Sensor size are the one what you should care about when you're think about light sensitivity, detail, fov, etc.

Excellent! We're finally getting rid of the cheap 12 MP camera modules they've been putting on flagship phones. It's about time these high-res cameras become the trend. I hope other companies follow suit.

Who will purchase this phone ? They crammed huge pixels in a small camera sensor...that means the pixels size will be reduced and as a result, a terrible low light performance...those who have Photography knowledge...never to purchase this phone....

The Exmor RS imx586 was developed by Sony as part of a list of sensors that any OEM can have. For example the imx258 (1/3.06" 13MP) is very popular.
Another example is the imx362 used by Pixel 2, U11, Zenfone 4 e Moto G5+.

There are some sensors that are exclusive, the companies like Huawei, Apple and Samsung work with Sony Imaging /Sony Semicon to have sensors just for themselves. Same fod Sony Mobile.

According to Sony, even at 48MP it will have better digital zoom, less artifacts than the regular 12MP. Also becoming 12MP 3,6 micron at night.

Lets not forget that pixel size does not grant better night photos, but ability do deal better with high iso value.
A7R3 (42MP) and A7S2 ( 12MP) are both full frame, but when scaled to 12MP the shots of A7R3 are better under any light conditions.

I don't understand why people say a 1/2" 48MP sensor will be competitive with a DSLR. Sensor size matters, not megapixel count and a 1/2" sensor isn't that much larger than a 1/2.3" one.

                  Interesting
But Bin only described it as not bad I was expecting something like great

BigDisplay, 05 Dec 2018Cmon boys and girls, stop this copy cat whining, all brand ... moreAgreed. Plus, it's technically not copying since resolution is at 48, not 41 or lower

Cmon boys and girls, stop this copy cat whining, all brand and all things are a part of a copy, if no copy, no innovation. All smartphones are a copy of the first smartphone, so stop this and grow up and go to bed
... U have to go to school tomorrow.

Will it have the optics and sensors to back up the mp? I guess not.

Personally speaking, I own Nokia 808 Pureview and a 18MP DSLR,
and I would still say a 12 MP phone camera does the job awesome for me and I don't need any extra megapixels!

However, smart software on the phone, can do the magic that nothing else can...

Various clever uses are there for a high megapixel sensor.... Zooming in, or snapping a non zoomed noiseless pic, or touching high ISO's.... or pixel binning. or single shot HDR...

Unfortunately, I don't expect the best tricks in the world from Xiaomi.... Let's see anyways what they do.

So...Xiaomi are the ones to do what we expected from Nokia, Huawei or Samsung?
I mean I love Xiaomi (have 3 phones in the family) but it's shocking that
no one else has even thought about using that mammoth image sensor (be it Samsung or Sony's module).
Hats off to what I am sure is going to be a successful Mi phone (Mi 9?)

Lol I am guessing this came after that MKBHD test. Next time they don't want to be runners up. They are going to beat the Mate next time. 48MP vs 40MP. Do the Math. :P
